At the 2022 Berlin Air Show, the German company Diehl defence presented the "IRIS-T Hypersonic Defense" (IRIS-T HYDEF) missile concept for intercepting hypersonic cruise missiles or hypersonic gliders, the IRIS -T HYDEF has a three-stage design, the first stage uses the IRIS-T-SLM missile booster, the second stage is for cruising, powered by a solid-state ramjet engine, In order to achieve the purpose of striking a balance between higher speeds or greater ranges, the third stage is the impact "kill vehicle", which has its own propulsion system and can be steered by aerodynamics and lateral thrust. Infrared and passive RF seekers are used. With speeds of over Mach 4, a range of 200 km and an altitude of 40 km, the concept seems to apply to striking a wide variety of targets in the stratosphere – not just hypersonic weapons.
