A fighter was developed neither for air combat nor ground attack, but to deal with nasty anti-submarine patrol aircraft.

Speaking of which, everyone should have guessed that it is the world's first vertical/short take-off and landing fighter in service, the Yak-38, a vertical take-off fighter that can only fly for 40 minutes and has a combat radius of only 120 kilometers. But the Yak-38 occupies an important place in both the history of Soviet aviation and the history of world aviation.

The Yak-38 was developed in the late 1960s by the Yakovlev Experimental Design Bureau of the USSR. The prototype flew in 1971 and mass production began in 1975. Using a combination of lift engine and rotary spout engine, the lift engine can also be used to adjust pitch motion and trim in addition to vertical lifting.

Powerplant: The main propulsion unit is a Tumansky R-27V-300 turbojet engine with a thrust of about 6790 kg, mounted in the center of the fuselage, and the gas is ejected through a pair of steerable side nozzles behind the wings. No afterburner.   Two Kolesov RD-36-35FV lift engines, each with a thrust of 35 kN (3571 kg), are mounted in the fuselage immediately behind the cockpit. Gas jet down, can also be used to adjust pitch motion and trim.

A total of 143 Yak-38s were produced between 1973 and 1983, and 50 were produced in the upgraded Yak-38M.

Performance data: captain (A type) 15.50 meters, (B type two-seater) 17.68 meters, wingspan 7.32 meters (when folded) 4.88 meters, basic weight 6800 kg, maximum take-off weight 11700 kg, in-flight fuel capacity of 2720 kg, maximum speed (high altitude) M0.95, practical ceiling of 12000 meters.
