The latest news in the Spanish media is that the Spanish government plans to sue Algeria to the European Union. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs considers that Algeria's unilateral freezing of trade with Spain is contrary to the Euro-Mediterranean Agreement of 2005, which established a system of preferential union between the European Community and Algeria.

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said Spain would respond "appropriately, calmly, constructively and firmly to Algeria's decision in order to defend the interests of Spain and Spanish businesses".

Article 38 of algeria's agreement with the European Union stipulates that the parties "shall commit themselves to all recurring payments related to transactions between the two in a freely convertible currency" and guarantees the free movement of capital and the repatriation of profits for direct investment in Algeria, as well as other measures aimed at removing barriers to trade and discriminatory measures between the country and the European group.

The agreement also stipulates that any dispute concerning the application or interpretation of the treaty will be submitted to the Council of the Union, which is composed of EU and Algerian ministers, and lower-level disputes may be submitted to the Union Committee, which is composed of officials from both sides. If no agreement can be reached, three arbitrators will be appointed to settle the dispute.

欧盟(EU)这边‬也‬立即做出了反应,表示已经“准备好面对阿尔及利亚针对任何共同体国家的任何类型的强制措施采取”。 The EU also said Algeria is an important partner of the EU in the Mediterranean.

European Commission spokesman Eric Mamer also urged Algeria to reverse the "extremely worrying" decision.

After the European Commission sided with Spain and threatened retaliation against Algeria, Algeria changed its previous hardline stance.

阿尔及利亚驻欧盟大使馆本‬周五‬下午发表声明称,尽管由于双边协议暂停导致外交紧张,阿尔及利亚仍保证向西班牙供应天然气,并放弃了切断与西班牙贸易的计划。 The Algerian mission in Brussels assured in a conciliatory tone that the Government's so-called measures to curb ongoing transactions with European partners existed only in the minds of those who claimed it and those eager to stigmatize it.

To this end, Wednesday's decision (suspending the treaty of good-neighbourliness and friendship with Spain, which has been in force since 2002, and announcing that from Thursday onwards the direct debit of foreign trade operations to and from Spain) will not affect the "direct or indirect commitments" with the EU within the framework of the trade agreement. Algeria will continue to fulfil all commitments made in this context, with all contractual commitments undertaken by interested commercial companies.
