India is the world's second largest sugar producer, producing more than 25 million tonnes of sugar in 2020 alone, and bagasse is piled up in mountains.
Especially during the sugarcane harvest season, a sugar mill produces more than 30,000 tons of bagasse per day, and sugar mills across the country can reach 100 million tons per year. So much of the bagasse is used by power plants to burn to generate electricity, and only a small part is used to make paper.
The owner of a local paper mill, more than 40 years ago, his parents opened a paper mill, using sugarcane waste to turn paper. Today, his paper mill is in financial trouble, many of the old machinery and equipment have not been replaced by the machine is no longer able to operate, and the factory is on the verge of bankruptcy.
By chance, the owner of the paper mill saw a business opportunity on TV. The tableware used by Indians is basically polystyrene, which is too serious for environmental pollution.
Especially in India, a populous country, many landfills are directly incinerated to deal with this waste. So I thought of using these bagasse to make degradable disposable tableware.
Then the indian paper mill owner mortgaged all his property to the bank in exchange for a large loan to modify the equipment and produce disposable tableware machines. Soon the factory was up and running, using bagasse to produce degradable disposable tableware.
During the sugarcane harvest season, about 100 trucks a day are transported to Mark's factory full of bagasse, screened, cleaned, pressurized, and finally dispersed to different machines for shaping, producing degradable disposable tableware.
The factory can produce 1 million per day, and although it will be about 20% more expensive than plastic tableware in terms of cost, there are still many Indians who are happy to accept this degradable tableware.
Because this degradable tableware is almost zero for environmental pollution, it is much better than plastic. In the face of increasing pollution in India, paper mill owners are also working hard to promote this disposable degradable tableware.
He hopes that one day, most of India will be able to use this disposable degradable tableware, which will make a big difference to India's current environment.
