"Maulam" means "New Moon Prayer Festival". It is the largest and most solemn religious festival in Tibetan areas. Originated in Tsongkhapa's Reformation. During the Ming Dynasty, the famous master Tsongkhapa created this festival in honor of Buddha Shakyamuni, and now has a history of more than a thousand years. Every year from the fourth day of the first lunar month to the seventeenth day of the first lunar month. Each temple will hold a ceremony to celebrate, and all the monks of each temple will recite the sutra in the large prayer hall 6 times a day, of which the fourth time is dedicated to prayer, praying that the Dharma is always present, that there is sentient happiness, and that the world will be peaceful. During this period, various large-scale activities will be held, which can be described as a pilgrimage for tens of thousands of people, and the scale is so large that the geographical range ranges from Gannan to western Sichuan. From white-haired old people to infant babies, they all dressed up in costumes and gathered in monasteries. All kinds of strange religious prayer ceremonies, Buddha statues, Tibetan opera costume masks, drums and trumpets, thangkas, butter flowers and other religious cultures and artistic treasures are displayed in front of people's eyes, and the whole festival is shrouded in a magical and mysterious religious atmosphere.
