A view of the Wenchang River.

It used to be "Chengbo is like practicing white"

"A small river in the shape of a 'Ya' shape, several small arch bridges straddling the river, the Arcades on both sides of the river in the Nanyang style and the tall and tall coconut trees constitute an ink painting of the overseas Chinese in the southern country." This is the scene of Tan Xianbo's first sight of Wencheng. Tan Xianbo, an 85-year-old wenchang writer, is an "old Wencheng" who has lived by the Wenchang River since he was 13 years old (1948) from the countryside of Nanyang to Wencheng Ziwen Primary School. In this flash, 72 years have passed.

Growing up in Si, Tan Xianbo was very familiar with the Wenchang River, and he told reporters that the year and month in which the Wenchang River was formed is difficult to verify. However, the Wenchang River, known as nanqiao water in ancient times, is formed by the convergence of Beishan Creek and Yaqian Creek, in the shape of "Ya", with a total length of 37 kilometers and a basin area of 381 square kilometers. After the main road flows through the town of Wenwen, it enters the sea through Bamen Bay. The confluence of the two tributaries at the source of the Wenchang River at Wencheng was originally the site of Wenchang's ancient county.

In the sixth year of Ming Longqing (1572), Gu Naiyou of Zhixian County built a city along the Wenchang River with stones, with a circumference of 350 zhang, a width of 1 zhang, a height of 1 zhang and 5 feet, and a pheasant 700. The Ancient City Pool was formed. Although the ancient city pond is small, it is also chic and beautiful, oval-shaped, with beautiful lines and a layout of left and right. Ma Ribing, Zhixian county of the Qing Dynasty, once wrote a poem "Night Moon at Nanqiao" to praise the ancient city: "The purple shell bell is silent, and the south bridge moon is bright." Willow smoke fans of the ancient road, flower shadow to protect the spring city. The sea is far away, and the sky is clear. Chengbo is like practicing white, knowing that it is twilight tide flat. ”

"The flood control stone embankment of the Wenchang River is built by the bricks of the ancient city wall of Wencheng." Tan Xianbo pointed to the embankments on both sides of the Wenchang River in the shape of "Ya" and said that it was a protective embankment made of bricks in the ancient city, but the ancient walls of Wencheng ran from land to the river and built the "Great Wall in the Water". At that time, the Wenchang River was located at the south gate of the ancient Wencheng, and in the early years of the Republic of China, people built a convenient city on the opposite bank of the south gate, which is now Wennan Street. In the 11th year of the Republic of China, Chen Daocang, the then county magistrate, organized migrant workers to tear down the ancient city wall and build a river embankment in the shape of "Ya". At this point, the old city walls no longer exist.

"At that time, the poem described the Wenchang River as 'chengbo like refining white', which is indeed the case." About the story of wenchang river, Tan Xianbo not only got it from the history books, he also had vivid personal experience. When he was a child, he watched the tide rise and fall every day, and the water was green and blue. In the summer, a group of children often jump into the river to swim. "The water of the river is light and sweet at low tide; And when the tide rises, the sea water pours in, and it becomes salty and astringent. Tan Xianbo said.

The Hainan Daily reporter noted that the "Wenchang County Chronicle" published in 2000 also confirmed Tan Xianbo's recollection: "In the 1950s, the river was clear, and it was common for people to swim and play in the river, hook and rod fishing, and Wencheng Town along both sides of the river has always been a place for people to cool off, rest and entertain. ”

A bridge crosses the Wenchang River.

The ancient bridge of the river hides the old things

Cities thrive on water. In the old days, Wencheng's waterway traffic was developed, which led to the development of commerce and trade in Wencheng and gave birth to commercial blocks. In Wencheng Town, the Wenchang River runs through the city, and a series of Nanyang-style arcades are built next to the river, which is Wennan Street. Built in the 1920s, Wennan Street winds for more than 100 meters.

"In the 1980s, Wennan Street was the most prosperous place in Wencheng, with shops and people coming and going, so it was not busy." Local residents recall that at that time, there were many food shops on the street, and there was a baoluo powder shop on the street, the façade was not large, the equipment was simple, but it was the most famous, and a bowl of hot noodles was served, which was the most flavorful human fireworks.

To this day, the Hainan Daily reporter came to Wennan Street again, walking in the narrow street cracks, mixed with the crowds of people, and saw that there were still restaurants, miscellaneous shops, shoe houses, clothing stalls, wine songs and other small shops and stalls scattered on the street, the coconut shadows on the side of the road, and the shadow of the arcade building was reflected on the Wenchang River.

Where there is a river, there must be a bridge. When it comes to the Wenchang River, in addition to Wennan Street, there is also a bridge on the river. On the "Ya" shaped channel of the Wenchang River, the most storied of them is the Bridge of Tackling The Gate and the Bridge of Taiping.

The bridge was once called the Bridge of Convenience and the Bridge of Shame. Folklore has it that during the Xianfeng period of the Qing Dynasty, there was a reader lin Laolan in Dafeng Village, Donglu Town, who was upright and loved to fight and hug. One day, he met a drunk man beating someone on Wencheng Street, and he went forward to persuade him, and the drunk man wanted to beat him. However, Lin Laolan was angry, and hit the drunk man on the head with a cigarette in his hand, and the drunk man fell to the ground, and died after being helped home. The drunkard's family sued Lin Laolan to the county court. In the courtroom, Lin Laolan truthfully stated: "This thing (the cigarette tube) is not a murderous thing, its place is not a place of murder, and I am not a murderer." One cannot be shameless, and one cannot be ashamed of one's shame. I would like to apologize for my injuries. The county magistrate asked what was it? At that time, just when the convenience bridge was washed away by the water, Lin Laolan said: "I am willing to rebuild the convenience bridge to remember shame." Later, Lin Laolan funded the reconstruction of the Convenience Bridge, which was also called the "Bridge of Shame" at the time.

The Taiping Bridge was donated by chen, a Ming Dynasty man, after he was a jinshi in the examination. During the Ming Dynasty earthquake in Qiongbei, the bridge collapsed, and several large stones were placed in the river, and people could only step on the stones to cross the river. During the Ming Chongzhen years, Chen Shiji, a man of the Ming Dynasty, picked up luggage to send off, and when she walked to the Taiping Bridge, because the river rose, her sister-in-law accidentally fell into the river, and she was angry and resentful. Chen Shiji immediately said, "If I am in the middle, I will fix this bridge." Later, he really joined the section and the first, won the jinshi, and when Yijin returned to his hometown, he donated funds to build the Taiping Bridge.

Green waves in the river plant new songs

Time travels, and in the blink of an eye, it enters the track of rapid urbanization. The pace of urban development inevitably leaves some traces on the pristine land, and the Wenchang River is no exception. "Wenchang County Chronicle" said: "With the development of modern urbanization, the water source of the Wencheng River section has deteriorated day by day. At present, almost the entire county's industrial wastewater, medical sewage, and domestic sewage are directly or indirectly concentrated in the Wenchang River. Due to the large amount of production and domestic waste into the river, the river is rich in eutrophication. ”

Li Changmin, 73, who has lived on the banks of the Wenchang River for generations, is also deeply touched by this, recalling that when he was in his 10s, he often went down to the river with his partners to catch fish and shrimp, and by the 1970s and 1980s, the river was obviously polluted. "In particular, during the production of pineapple canned food in the 1980s, Wenchang Canning Factory discharged 800 tons/day of pineapple wastewater into the river, resulting in the death of many aquatic organisms such as fish, shrimp and crabs due to lack of oxygen, and the river water turned black, and the smell could be smelled within a kilometer of the county seat." Li Changmin said.

The people have called for something, and the government has responded. In order to protect the ecology of the river, the comprehensive treatment of the Wenchang River has been put on the agenda.

"In order to solve the problem of water pollution in Wenchang River, the relevant departments of Wenchang City have taken many measures at the same time to continue to 'wash' the water body." Sheng Shaolong, deputy director of the Wenchang Municipal Water Affairs Bureau, told reporters that in recent years, the Wenchang Municipal Water Affairs Bureau has improved the sewage pipe network around the Wenchang River and carried out water quality treatment for the Wenchang River, implemented the "river chief system", and established a long-term mechanism for river ecological protection.

The effectiveness of governance is reflected in some data: according to the water environment monitoring data of relevant departments, from January 2018 to May 2019, the water quality of wenchang River continued to improve, and at the best time it reached class III, that is, it can be used for daily drinking after treatment.

Nowadays, walking on the embankment of the Wenchang River, you can often see such a situation: two people in a boat and a pole, with baskets and fishing nets, from early morning to dusk, tossing and turning on the 5 km long and 30 meters wide river channel, silently cleaning up the garbage of the river, "beauty" for the Wenchang River. They are members of the Wenchang Municipal Sanitation Bureau's River Work Group, which has been responsible for salvaging garbage and debris from the Wenchang River since its establishment in 1997, and has become a "scavenger" of the river without complaint or regret.

The breeze blows, the Wenchang River floods with green waves, and the air is filled with the natural fragrance of coconut trees and green plants. Li Changmin often gathered with old friends in the courtyard by the river, leisurely drinking his father's tea, playing chess, and chatting. That scene, permeated with a little old taste that has been a long time ago, seems to dream back to the southern water town of that year.
