Curiously, the camel is an animal living in the desert area, and Huizhou is located in the south of the river full of greenery, the two have no half-cent relationship, why is Huishang called "Hui Camel"?
Huishang refers to entrepreneurs in Anhui Province today, but in ancient times, it specifically referred to merchants in the area of the old Huizhou capital, including the six counties of She, Yi, Xiuning, Wuyuan, Qimen, and Jixi.
Huizhou people have a long history of business, as early as the Eastern Jin Dynasty there are records of activities, and then gradually developed and grew, the Ming Dynasty Formed a Shang Gang Group during the Chenghua Period. During the Ming Jiajing period, the business activities of Hui merchants reached their peak, and together with Jin merchants and Chao shang, they were called the three major merchant gangs in ancient China, leaving behind the reputation of "no emblem and no business".
The reason why Huishang is named "Hui Camel" has three sayings: First, during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Huishang strength and funds were very strong, and every time they went to a place, they quickly controlled the local economic lifeline, so many people in the Jiangnan region called the huishang merchants who were rich and invincible as "Hui Boss", and in the Huizhou dialect, the pronunciation of "Boss" was very similar to "Camel", and it was slowly called "Hui Camel". After hearing this, Huishang felt quite affinity and gradually accepted this title.
Second, after the fall of the Ming Dynasty, the Ming Dynasty minister Jin Sheng led the rebel army to retreat to the mountains in the eastern part of Jixi County to resist bravely, and finally was captured because he was outnumbered. Before being captured, Jin Sheng warned his subordinates: "Be a camel in the emblem, and not surrender to foreign races." His men followed his instructions and persisted in resisting for more than a hundred years. In this way, the metaphor of the "emblem camel" preferring to die has been passed down. Later, Hu Shi, a Jixi man, saw five hundred kinds of "Jing camel series" in the United States and was deeply moved by this history of blood and tears against the Qing. In the autumn of 1946, Hu Shi gave the first banner of the Nanjing Huizhou Guild Hall "Strive to be a emblem camel", and since then it has been publicized again and again, and "emblem camel" has become more and more known to the world and has become a synonym for Huizhou people.
Third, the geography of Huizhou has the saying that "seven mountains, one water, one field, and one point is a manor", there are many people and few lands, and the locals can only choose one to enter and go out to do business. Most of the Huizhou merchants started with small business, diligent and tenacious, pioneering and enterprising, footprints all over the country, they and camels are not afraid of hardships, not afraid of sacrifice, hard work, trekking characteristics are very similar, so "Hui Camel" has become the spiritual symbol of Huizhou people!
