【Huang's Ancient Architecture Encyclopedia】No. 32378: Cold Wonderland Uummannaq Island

Find a pure world covered in snow and ice.

Most of the world's largest island is located in the Arctic Circle, with a cold climate and a strait across the border from Canada and Iceland. In addition to the various glaciers floating on the surface of the sea and the island's snow and ice landscape, Greenland also has polar day and night phenomena unique to the polar region, as well as the occasional colorful Northern Lights above, which is a fantasy fairy tale world.

Umanak is a city in western Greenland with a population of about 1,500 people. Located above 70 degrees north latitude, Umanak was founded on the island of Umanak of the same name. The island has a height of 1,170 meters, Umanak Mountain, because the slope is very steep, so the local name Umanak, that is, the Greenland word for "steep" meaning. Nearby is the Umanak Fjord, where you can visit the glacier. The main modes of transport are Greenland Airlines helicopters and boat flights.

Umanak is a small coastal town in the municipality of Kasuitsap, with a five-month ice period throughout the year, known as Greenland's "cold wonderland". A blue-gray mountain peak breaks through the ice sheet, under the blue sky, the clouds and mist swirl like streamers around the heart-shaped mountains, a colorful small city spreads out under the feet, the picture is dreamlike, the frozen small city, rarely encounter pedestrians, but everywhere you can see red, blue, yellow, green, black and other buildings.

The wooden houses here were brought to Greenland by the Danish missionary Egard in the 18th century, but the locals painted the houses in different colors to represent their use or homeowner's occupation. For example, the Red House is definitely a building related to catering, retail or education, and school teachers often live in the Red House. Hunters and fishermen live in blue houses, postmen or telecommunications company clerks live in green houses, police officers live in black houses, and yellow houses are hospitals or clinics.

In Umarnak, apart from the small town church, there is only one house that was not painted and was built using stones and peat. It is the "Santa Claus Fort" located on the small island of Sbole Bay in the west of Umarnak. Until now, all Greenlanders, and indeed all Of Danes, have decided that this is where Santa Claus lives.

Brightly coloured huts are scattered on the shore, blending in with the snow, as if scattered on a white canvas with oil paint, and the masses have to drive a sled pulled by Greenland dogs, and motor vehicles cannot go to the island.
