Ecological crisis | Berlin's crayfish are flooded again, don't you come to help you take a bite?

Summer is coming, and it's crayfish season again. When I thought of being able to eat garlic crayfish, spicy crayfish... The editor Harrah's son is going to stay.

But the Germans, especially the Berliners, were about to weep. Thousands of crayfish crawl the streets of Berlin, affecting not only ecological problems, but also municipal problems.

In order not to let them continue to endanger the local environment, the Berlin city government has ordered the killing of crayfish.

Feel at home in Berlin

The Louisiana crayfish are extremely adaptable, not only to withstand a drought of up to four months; they can also survive temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius and temperatures of minus 15 degrees Celsius.

Cities like Berlin, where climate change is milder, are particularly interested in them. But due to the lack of natural predators, crayfish have exploded in Berlin.

The crayfish epidemic has also become a major problem that has plagued Berlin for so many years.

In fact, after they appeared in Berlin, they were not discovered for a long time, until August 2017, when more and more people found "running around the street" crayfish in Tiergarten Park.

Since then, hundreds of kilograms of crayfish have been fished annually in the lakes of Tiergarten Park and Britz Gardens.

It is speculated that these crayfish are most likely the offspring of released crayfish. For example, aquarium releases.

Derk Ehlert, a wildlife expert at the Environmental Management Department, said the River Spree itself is a transit area for invasive species, and the lakes and waterways in Tiergarten Park happen to be connected to the River Spree, so soon new species will migrate from the River Spree to the lakes of Tiergarten Park again and again.

Known invasive species in the last two years is marbling crawfish: the species was first caught in 2021 in The Greater Glynik Lake on the border of Berlin and Brandenburg.

After such a long period of "brewing", it has now been found in Lake Schlachten and several other lakes in the southwest of Berlin.

But there is also good news that in recent years, the fishing of Louisiana crayfish in Berlin has been on a downward trend. That said, the previous intervention worked, and the number of crayfish has been decreasing.

But that can be bad news for fishermen (who have a government-issued lobster fishing license), who has fewer opportunities to make money:

Because in recent years, more and more Germans have become fond of eating crayfish, so local restaurants and fishmongers have begun to buy crayfish in large quantities.

At the same time, the government will also provide fishing subsidies, for every kilogram of crayfish caught, you can get a subsidy of 7 euros, up to a maximum of 5,000 euros.

Why not do one job and make two dollars?

In addition, June is coming soon, and the fifth season for Louisiana crayfish (June 1) is about to begin, so why not hurry up and join?
