Ferrari SP48 Unica: A new One-Off model from Maranello

On May 5, the latest masterpiece of the Prancing Horse One-Off series, the Ferrari SP48 Unica, unveiled the mystery and ranked among the most personal models in the Prancing Horse sports car. These unique customized models are created according to the special needs of each customer, fully meet the needs of customers' individual customization and highlight their unique tastes.

The Ferrari SP48 Unica, led by Ferrari's global chief designer, Flavio Manzoni, is a two-seater Berlinetta sports car based on the F8 Tributo platform. Thanks to its tense sense of lines and dynamic posture, this new car is as recognizable and impeccable as the Ferrari F8 Tributo, thanks to the contours of its arrow-shaped front face. The key to creating this visual effect was the redesigned headlights and subsequently rearranged brake intakes.

A core feature of this unique new car at the design level is the extensive use of programmed parametric modeling technology and 3D prototyping (additive manufacturing technology). Based on this, the team of designers at the Ferrari Design Center and engineers in Maranello were able to redesign the front grille and engine intakes. This advanced manufacturing process helped the team design the perfect 3D grille that seamlessly connects with other components around it, naturally flowing, and presents an integrated overall visual aesthetic.

The bodywork also features a programmatic graphic solution that echoes the grille design and influences the overall design of the Ferrari SP48 Unica: the transition from black parts (including the windows, roof and bonnet) to the body is clear. Due to the reduction of the size of the side windows and the cancellation of the design of the rear window, the front of the vehicle is further improved to block the scorching sun, highlighting the ferrari SP48 Unica's distinct sense of power and presenting a seamless visual beauty.

The central part of the roof is particularly conspicuous from the top view, which includes the geometry of the air intakes located in front of the rear wing and integrated into the rear of the carbon fiber hood. From this perspective, one can gain insight into the extensive research work carried out by Ferrari in the design of the SP48 Unica, highlighting the design aesthetics created by the combination of symmetrical elements and interlacing of lines.

The thermodynamic-hydrodynamic design of the Ferrari SP48 Unica has been further optimised to ensure that cooling requirements are met and that a distinctive aerodynamic balance is achieved. Compared to the Ferrari F8 Tributo's styling, the most noticeable changes to the new car include engine cooling air intakes above the front bumper and below the rear spoiler. Each air intake is programmed with a grille for a sense of depth and the angles of each part are just right to maximize air intake.

Engineers also placed the intercooler's air intakes directly behind the side windows, which helped to reduce the size of the wing intakes. The longer rear suspension design helps to reduce suction in the roof area and enhance the rear downforce of the vehicle.

Inside the cockpit, the new car follows the technical configuration of the Ferrari F8 Tributo (excluding the rear window), but in order to perfectly show the beautiful design, sportiness and flair of the Ferrari SP48 Unica, the design team has invested a lot of research and development in its color matching and decorative elements. For example, most of the decorations in the seats and cabins are made of specially developed black laser-punched Alcantara fabric, while the lower part is made of fluorescent orange-red fabric that matches the color scheme of the exterior. The pattern of the fabric, the hexagonal shape of the grille and the procedural design of the roof echo the design of the roof, creating a pleasing connection between the interior and exterior of the cockpit.

In the cockpit of the Ferrari SP48 Unica, the polished sill panels with the same laser-embossed hexagon pattern are eye-catching. The application of matte carbon fibre gives the cockpit a distinct sense of technology and exclusivity, which complements the trims of Grigio Canna di Fucile Grey .

This One-Off model was built for a loyal Prancing Horse customer who was deeply involved in the design of this model. The Ferrari SP48 Unica presents the sports car character in a bold and uninhibited way, subtly highlighting its racing spirit. The Ferrari SP48 Unica not only achieved master-level optimizations on the original model, but also drew on and paid tribute to Ferrari's passionate and innovative brand essence.

>>> special projects

The Ferrari Special Project aims to create a unique Prancing Horse model (called the One-Off model) with an exclusive design according to the requirements of each customer, so that each customer has a truly unique Prancing Horse sports car. Each project is entirely based on the client's ideas, which are then developed by a team of designers at the Ferrari Design Centre.

After determining the body proportions and styling, the designer team will develop a detailed design plan and styling plan before entering the production phase of the new One-Off model. The entire process takes an average of more than a year, during which the customer is always involved in the design evaluation and model verification. At this point, a unique Ferrari sports car with the Prancing Horse brand identity was born, with the same quality as other Prancing Horse models produced at the Maranello plant.
