Auto parts giant Magna is further expanding its business footprint in autonomous driving assistance systems (ADAS) and electrification. Recently, Magna officially inaugurated its new plant in Kochnyk, Slovakia, which will provide ADAS products to two European car companies and new car companies around the world.

It is reported that the Magna Cochineyk plant covers an area of about 22,000 square meters and is expected to start operations in the fourth quarter of 2022.

When completed, the new Kochnyk facility will also be Magna's fifth manufacturing facility in Slovakia, which Magna expects to employ up to 600 people by 2027.

Magna said the new plant in Slovakia will produce L2-rated ADAS solutions and technologies. These include a front camera module and an in-car camera for Magna's recently announced integrated ride monitoring system. In addition, the plant will also manufacture electronic control units for inverters used in electric vehicles.

Magna Driver and Occupant Monitoring Systems combine cameras, electronics and in-car mirrors in one product

Magna quietly announced in February that it had signed a large order with a German car company for the mass production of a ride-on monitoring system. Magna said the driver monitoring technology is an industry first, integrating cameras, electronics and in-car rearview mirror technology, and will be on the market in 2024.

Magna Ride Monitoring System

According to the data, Magna's ride monitoring system will fully integrate Magna's high-resolution camera, infrared emitter and electronic control unit into the interior mirrors produced by Magna. One of the unique features of the system is that the camera is hidden behind the mirror glass, which is an improvement in packaging and styling compared to existing solutions currently on the market.

It is reported that the system will use software to monitor the driver's head, eyes and body movements, and monitor whether the driver has distracted behavior, drowsiness and fatigue. In addition, the system also has an in-car monitoring function, which can not only monitor the driver, but also monitor the behavior and status of other occupants in the car.

From the order information revealed by Magna, it can be seen that the first batch of applications of the integrated driving monitoring system in 2024 is a German car company, so the target seems to be Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Volkswagen's high-end brands. Which one will be the first to use this system? Feel free to leave a message to guess.
