New agriculture must have new thinking! The design of ten rooftop farms out of the circle of fire abroad has a great future for agriculture

The days of home isolation during the epidemic have made people more and more eager for outdoor activities, and even yearn to return to pastoral life and enjoy tranquility and freedom. And these urban agricultural landscape cases make people turn pastoral dreams into reality. Agricultural landscapes can become eye-catching landscapes that blend into urban spaces and allow people to experience novel lifestyles.

Thailand National Legislative Affairs University rooftop organic farm

Somachi University of Thailand has repurposed its 236,806-square-foot roof site to transform the previously wasted space into Asia's largest organic rooftop farm. Combining landscape architecture with traditional terraces, the farm combines sustainable food production, energy regeneration, organic waste and water management, and public space to propose adaptive solutions to environmental problems.

The design of the roof farm combines the earthwork structure of the terraces with modern green roof technology, which increases the efficiency of rainwater harvesting, filtration and slowing runoff by 20 times compared to traditional concrete roofs. Rainwater snaked down the slopes, nourishing the crops on the roof and providing food for the school's teachers and students. Cisterns are set up on each side of the roof to collect and store excess rainwater for future dry seasons.

Suan Phueng Farm, Thailand

The design is derived from the charm of agriculture. The project owner, who owns a vast farmland in the Thai landscape town of Suan Phueng, intends to combine the produce here with an agricultural lifestyle for the city's residents who have been in the cage for a long time. Therefore, the first phase of the "Coro" project, located in the front of the same plot as the farm, is mainly used for agricultural product display and agricultural life experience.

The specific dimensions of 1.5 meters are carefully designed for the farm, i.e. the appropriate tillage distance, and thus the defined grid system connects each floor of the building from open space to enclosed space. Its structure, skin, services, spatial planning and materials support each other and together define different spaces.

POST Houston Rooftop Farm in downtown Houston, USA

Post Houston's top floor is a roof garden of more than 20,000 square meters, creating a new urban ecosystem with one of the world's largest rooftop gardens and organic farms. The old building is an industrial space with little natural light. The builder cut the roof slabs to let light shine through the middle of the building, making the hall the "city square" of the area. And a polymer film designed by NASA was used to insulate the building and protect its interior from external influences.

The rooftop farm will be operated by a for-profit supplier of sustainable and organic farm solutions in Houston. The farm is expected to produce more than 50,000 pounds of organic produce per year. The farm will provide agricultural education, working with canteen chefs throughout the year to bring guests a true farm-to-table experience. The rooftop space will also offer a unique event venue in downtown Houston that will host weddings, farm dinners, sunset yoga classes, and more.

Chicago, USA, Garrickonmore Youth Center Roof Garden

The Roof Garden at the Gerry Cammore Teen Center provides a space for teenagers to learn after school, and last year alone, the Roof Garden produced 1,000 pounds of organic food for students, local restaurants and the center's café. The picturesque shape of the garden transforms the typical toiling vegetable garden into a beautiful place to rest.

With an area of approximately 758 square metres, the roof garden offers urban agriculture in ultra-traditional spaces and provides an excellent balance between ornamental and practical needs. Soils 46 to 61 cm deep offer possibilities for food production, including cabbage, sunflowers, carrots, lettuce and strawberries. Not only does the garden reduce the cost of climate control, but it also provides outdoor classes where enthusiastic children can feel the joy of harvesting potatoes and carrots with gardening tools.

Vietnam Spiral Farm Kindergarten

Although the kindergarten is only two stories high, the design of the whole building is unique. From the outside, if viewed from above, the kindergarten is like a three-ring knot on a large green field, and the grass and trees grow in these undulating rings.

The roof of the kindergarten is covered with lawns, planted with plants and vegetables; three courtyards are arranged in a row, each of which is also paved with lawns and planted with trees. The kindergarten covers a wide area of 10,600 square meters, so the children have a lot of room for activities, very close to nature, can run and play freely on the grass, and can participate in activities such as growing vegetables, experience and learn agriculture.

Finally, new agriculture must have new thinking! Urban agriculture has the dual genes of city and agriculture, with the help of new supply chains, new businesses, etc., it will surely burst out of new agricultural value, and the future can be expected!
