Aubameyang had a high salary at Arsenal, with a weekly salary of between £300,000 and £350,000.
In order to save the expense, Arsenal gave up his transfer fee and let Barca pick up a bargain, which Xavi called "a gift from heaven".
Barca's finances are not optimistic – which is why Messi is leaving – so in order to sign Aubameyang, they need to get the goalscorer to accept a sharp pay cut.
The players agreed to receive only €2 million for the rest of the season, equivalent to a weekly salary of £64,000.
So how did they get him to agree to a pay cut?
Barca have promised to pay him £15m next season if Oba accepts a pay cut, or a total of €20 million (£16.7 million) for a season and a half.
For those who are accustomed to calculating salaries on a weekly basis, this equates to £288,000 a weekly salary, or 4.5 times the current salary.
That would make him one of the highest paid players in Barca's squad.

Of course, that's still less than he earned when he was at Arsenal, but Oba will turn 33 next season and Arsenal certainly won't offer such a high salary for players of this age.
There is no denying that Oba's performance at Barca so far has been successful. In his first 10 La Liga games, he contributed eight goals and one assist, similar to the start when he first joined Arsenal.
But the problem is not his opening stages at the club, but the ending.
