Foreign media: Cuomo's successor will become the first female governor of New York

Cathy Hochuer, as Vice Governor of New York State, has been a friendly face of the government for years, visiting remote coffee shops and factories in each of the state's 62 counties and participating in countless grand openings and civic events, according to Argentina's Buenos Aires Economic News Network reported on Aug. 10. Now, after New York Governor Andrew Komo resigned over a sexual harassment scandal, Khotsul will be the state's first female governor.

A Democratic centrist from western New York, Khotsul has worked in Como's shadow for two terms, but recently joined the ranks of politicians who criticized Como after an independent investigation concluded that Cuomo had sexually harassed at least 11 women during his tenure.

"I believe in these brave women." Hochur said in a statement on the 10th. She also stressed that Cuomo's actions were "offensive and illegal."

At the same time, Khotsul acknowledged the rumors that have been raging in recent months: she could become the governor of New York. She wrote: "Since the lieutenant governor is in the first place to succeed the governor, it is not appropriate for me to comment too much at this moment. ”

For many New Yorkers, Hochur is an obscure civil servant who has been doing a more ceremonial job since 2015. One afternoon in late July, for example, she announced that she had allocated funds for job training in Utica, discussed manufacturing in Rome, and visited downtown Cazenova, all of which were typical of her work.

None of this work is much compared to Como, whose activities are concentrated in Albany and New York City, and whose daily CORONAVIRUS briefings were a national focal point at the height of the outbreak.

Horchur is not part of Como's inner circle of aides and allies, but she is a seasoned politician, 62, whose experience in 11 campaigns has brought her from city council to Congress.

The daughter of a steelworker, Hochur worked as a lawyer in Washington as an aide to former Rep. John Raffles and later as an aide to Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan. She then took up her first public office at the Hamburg City Council.

Her next step in politics is to enter Congress. In 2011, Khotsul won unexpectedly in a special election in a district that republicans had controlled for decades, but lost to Republican Chris Collins in a re-election campaign a year later.

In 2014, after Como's first lieutenant governor, robert Duffy, the former mayor of Rochester, decided not to run for re-election, Cuomo chose Khotsul as his partner, and Khotsul began to shift politically to the left.

Khotschl supported New York State's pass of the nation's strictest gun control bill and the state's "Green Light Act," which allows undocumented immigrants to apply for a driver's license.

At a recent news conference, New York City Mayor De Blasio, who has a very bad relationship with Cuomo, said that he has come to know Hochur in recent years, and she seems to be a very reasonable candidate for lieutenant governor. (Compilation/Han Chao)
