Audi Human-Computer Interaction Design: Three Generations of Audi MMI

Editor's introduction: In a broad sense, Audi in-vehicle systems are called MMI, but subdivided, there are ancient navigation systems BNS / RNS, MMI era and the emerging MIB era, the author of this article analyzes the development history of Audi automotive human-computer interaction system, let's take a look at it.

The third part of the in-vehicle system comes to the development history of the Audi automotive human-computer interaction system, in a broad sense, the Audi in-vehicle system is collectively referred to as MMI (Multi Media Interface), but the iteration of the subdivision can be divided into the ancient navigation system BNS / RNS, MMI era and the emerging MIB era, let's find out...

01 BNS / RNS

BNS (Basic Navigation System) is simple CD-based navigation with a monochromatic red display.

The RNS (Radio Navigation System) is a stand-alone device that can be used as an option as an alternative to a standard stereo system (chorus, concert, symphony). It has a color LCD screen and more features than BNS, and the RNS system can also be subdivided into RNS-D, RNS-E, and RNS-E 2010.

The RNS-D has a tiltable color LCD screen with a 4:3 ratio placed in the middle of the device and 2 symmetrical control knobs on either side.

The RNS-E has a large 6.5-inch LCD screen on the left, a row of function buttons near the bottom edge, and a large control knob and a small volume knob on the right.

RNS-E 2010 is an upgraded version of the standard RNS-E appliance. It has a higher quality screen, MEDIA buttons instead of CD/TV or CD/SD buttons, and chrome control knobs.

BNS/RNS is very similar to our habitual MMI in layout and operation, but the system is strictly different, unable to share maps, CDs, and control car control functions, such as temperature, seat convenience and other operations.

02 MMI

Multi Media Interface (MMI) is an in-vehicle user interface media system developed by Audi. First unveiled at the 2001 Frankfurt Motor Show on the Audi Avantissimo concept, and at the end of 2002 it was officially mass-produced on the second-generation Audi A8 D3, with ten different models of MMI systems:

The Audi MMI 2G is the first MMI model released by Audi, which can be accurately called MMI 2G Low/Basic, which is an upgrade to Audi's basic information entertainment system. Later, Audi upgraded the basic model to MMI 2G High, equipped with a 6.5-inch TFT color display, Sirius/HD radio/FM/AM/DAB, MP3 CD player, iPod support MDI, Aux-In, USB and so on.

The Audi MMI 3G has the same level of functionality as the MMI 2G High, but is faster and has a more experiential user interface.

MMI 3G is also available in a variety of models, such as MMI 3G Basic (DVD Rom), MMI 3G/3G+ (HD), MMI 3G High and MMI 3G+ (connect). The MMI 3G+ offers a 7-inch TFT color display, four function keys (eight on the front) and a central control dial with joystick function. The Audi MMI 3G High offers a touchscreen that enables handwriting recognition and also features Bluetooth capability as a standard option.

03 MMI MIB

In order to better solve the problems of rapid innovation in consumer electronics and slower automobile manufacturing cycles, Audi has released a new architecture of MIB (Modular Infotainment Matrix Modular Infotainment Matrix).

It should be noted that MMI is a general term for entertainment systems, and regardless of what happens to the internal version, MMI is still used in external publicity.

1. MIB1 / MIB2

In 2012, MIB debuted in the Audi A3, which has three types:

Starter version

Standard Edition

Premium Edition

The starter version was not introduced to China, the standard version is the radio version (MMI Radio), and the advanced version can also be divided into two-dimensional navigation (MMI navigation) and advanced three-dimensional navigation plus.

Not only does it have a smooth UI visual experience, the navigation system also supports three years of free over-the-air updates. In mib 1's system, previously a separate touchpad was integrated on top of a spin button, which the user could write directly on. The voice system has also been further improved, and specific addresses can be spoken directly in the navigation.

In MIB 2, the starter version was eliminated to add an extended version, the interaction logic was optimized, and the operation panel buttons were reduced by two. Support smartphone interface, you can search for the contents of the mobile phone on the car machine. At the same time, the rear entertainment has been greatly improved, and two tablets can be selected as the rear infotainment system.

2. MIB 3

On May 11, 2020, Audi announced the third generation of MIB system, the interaction framework has been greatly changed compared to the previous generation of systems, the main interface in the form of cards to display the main functions, support gestures free drag, can be personalized layout of the car screen.

In addition, Audi has developed a version for Chinese users based on the Android platform, pre-installed mainstream streaming services such as Cool Music, Himalaya Radio, and can also download their favorite apps through the app store. In addition, it has also specially developed a WeChat mini program exclusive to car owners, which better meets the needs of users in the Chinese market and realizes the seamless connection between the mobile phone terminal and the car terminal.

04 Summary

In the three generations of Audi's automotive human-computer interaction system, it has navigated from basic radios and maps to the interconnected mini programs and application markets that are closer to the daily needs of users today.

In terms of interaction, from the original physical button space mapping, a more flexible trackpad, and then to a full touch screen.

In the iteration of human-computer system interaction from generation to generation, the interaction mode has always been well integrated with the interface interaction framework, providing users with a good user experience...
