Royal Ballet of The British Modern Dance

Golden Hour, Medusa, Airplane Mode

Broadcast time: 4/15 19:00

The high standards of modern dance of the Royal Ballet are reflected in the work of three of today's top choreographers: Christopher Wilton, Sheeddy Rabbi Chekao and Christopher Pat. The Golden Hour is based on the story of seven couples, with music from Vivaldi and Bosso colouring against the setting sun. Using Goretsky's familiar music and shocking group dances, Airplane Mode is a deep and enthusiastic reflection on immigrants. Between the two works, Medusa, a new work created by the famous choreographer Siddie Rabbi Chekao for the Royal Ballet, made its debut, pushing contemporary art to a whole new stage.

The Golden Hour

Christopher Wilton created Golden Hour at the San Francisco Ballet's New Works Festival in 2008 to celebrate the company's 75th anniversary. The Italian minimalist composer Ezio Bosso fused the music of Vilvadi to compose music for the work. The work was first performed at the Royal Ballet in 2016. In this exquisite work, seven pairs of dance partners alternate to complete three main duo dances, each with a very distinct personality: brisk, intimate, and confrontational. In the end, all the dancers complete the exciting ending together.

Medusa

Renowned modern choreographer Siddie Rabbi Chekao created his first work for the Royal Ballet. Chekao was artistic director of the Royal Ballet of Flanders and as artistic director of his own company Eastman, as well as a co-artist at the Chadler's Well Theatre. His choreography is eclectic and can be found in many different styles of dance training, including ballet, tap dance, jazz, flamenco and hip hop. His new works for the Royal Ballet will bring richer and more integrated elements to the modern dance scene and the Royal Opera House stage.

Airplane Mode

Canadian choreographer Christopher Pate has been hailed as "one of the most talented and fascinating choreographers of the moment" (The New York Times). Flight Mode, created in 2017, is her first for the Royal Ballet. This large-scale group work provides a powerful and deep analysis of the current refugee crisis in a moving way. Pat chose Goretzky's third symphony, "The Song of Sorrow," as the soundtrack, and Goretzki's music is often associated with the Holocaust, exploring themes such as maternal love and separation. Through this work, Pat gives new meaning to these themes, moving from the environment of the refugee community to the emotions of the individual, from the plight of millions of displaced people, focusing on the relationship between the individuals: the group of 36 dancers dances neatly and closely connected to each other, presenting a community of immigrants; one of the grieving couples separated from the crowd and expressed strong emotions in a double dance. After its premiere, Flight Mode was acclaimed as a profound response to the deepest crisis problems for humanity in today's society.

Royal Ballet

Ballet "Winter's Tale"

Air time: 4/23 19:00

In 2014, based on the successful adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, Christopher Wilton adapted Shakespeare's romantic work The Winter's Tale for the Royal Ballet. The premiere was a great success, with critics and audiences alike marveling at the exquisite, unique and moving story he told through exquisite dance. The story tells the story of a marriage that was ruined by jealousy, abandonment of children, and seemingly hopeless love. King Leoncz of Sicily, out of wild jealousy, suspected his pregnant wife, Hermione, of having an affair with his childhood friend Polyxens. His actions broke up their family, and he abandoned Hermione's newborn daughter, leaving Hermione and their son to die in misfortune. Petitta, a baby rescued by the Shepherd, grows up and falls in love with Florizier, polyxens' son. Polixens was enraged that his son had fallen in love with a commoner, and the young couple sought refuge in Leontz, who was remorseful about the past. Petit tower is recognized, Hermione, who is not dead but in hiding, returns home, and everyone is reunited, ending in forgiveness and reconciliation. The three-act modern ballet "The Winter's Tale" performs very well in the physical and musical representation of the characters' doubts, suspicions, anger, regrets, etc., and the sicilian king's snooping, entanglement, struggle, loss of control and arbitrariness like a thorn in the back is shown by the actors. Bob Crowley's powerful design and The Atmospheric Music of Jobie Talbot make Winter's Tale a masterpiece of modern narrative ballet.

The protagonist, Winston Smith, lives in a world of complete conformism, and his every move is monitored. However, when Winston meets Julia, he falls in love with Julia without hesitation. The play won the 2016 Southshore Sky Dance Art Award and was widely acclaimed by critics. The Guardian commented: "Bartley and Lee Bolt performed brilliantly, their bodies came to life, and their looks were deeply rooted in the minds of the audience. At the chilling ending, we realize not only how intently we are looking at the stage, but also that we may also be watched by the people on stage. ”
