The hard-court season came to an end for the time being, and the dirt season followed.
On April 10, Beijing time, the 2022 WTA500 Charleston Open ended the women's singles semifinals competition. Swiss star Bencic beat Alexandrova in 6-4 6-3 sets to reach the singles final for the first time since winning the Tokyo Olympics last year and the first clay event final of her career.
After achieving this feat, she was smiling.
"I thought it would be difficult for me to get to the final of the Dirt Race, and when that moment really came, I was incredibly happy." She said.
Prior to that, her best results in dirt races were two semi-finals, a loss to Sepelova in the 2014 Charleston semifinals and a loss to Halep in the 2019 Madrid semifinals.
It is worth mentioning that this is also the 14th time in her career that she has broken into the women's singles championship. After reaching the final, Bencic's world ranking will return to the top 15. If it wins the championship, it will rise to 13th place in the latest issue of the ranking list.
Bencic's 14 career WTA finals:
