After 13 years of silence, LucasArts' classic adventure puzzle series Monkey Island Heroes was officially announced today.
Return to Monkey Island will be developed by Terrible Toybox in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games and released by Devolver Digital, and is set after Monkey Island Heroes 2: Old Chuck's Revenge, released in 1991. Ron Gilbert, one of the creators of the first two games, will return to direct and design Monkey Island, Dave Crossman will return to co-write the plot, Dominic Armato will continue to voice the main character Guybrush Threepwood, and the music creation team that previously worked on the Monkey Island series will also return to produce the soundtrack of the game.
As early as 2013, Ron Gilbert said on Twitter that if he wanted to make a new work of "Monkey Island" in the future, it would be announced on April 1; in 2019, Devolver Digital asked Lucasfilm Games if he was interested in doing Monkey Island 3; on April 1 this year, Ron Gilbert announced in his "No April Fool's Day Content" blog that new works were under development, and four days later, The new work was officially announced and the official website of the game was made public.
There's no word yet on which platforms Return to Monkey Island will be released, but Devolver Digital has confirmed that it will launch in 2022.
