LEGO Star Wars: Skywalker Legends Preview: The Ultimate LEGO "Star Wars" Experience

The first thing that struck me in LEGO Star Wars: Skywalker Saga was not the ferocious firepower of the Blaster Gun, but the game's stunning visual performance. Developer Traveller's Tales' latest work, which delves into the vast expanse of the universe, shares the same film and television background as 2007's Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga, but this completely rebuilt and reimagined work is clearly a leap forward from its predecessor.

My 90-minute demo begins at the beginning of chapter four, on Princess Leia's consul ship, when she is trying to prevent Darth Vader from carrying out their newly learned Death Star plan. In LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga, the Corella light cruiser is mostly made up of drab corridors and rooms in off-white tones. And 15 years later, the same scene that appears on the screen is colorful, realistic in detail, and the visuals are more silky than the action of swinging your lightsaber.

As I confronted the Imperial Stormtroopers, the damaged electrical equipment sparkled and steamed, the computer terminals that lit up flashed with a rainbow of light, and the rotating cone-shaped pillars of light that lit up after triggering the alarm were realistically reflected on the shiny floor of the ship. Despite all the realistic details on display, I was able to clearly realize that the space was carefully constructed from small pieces of toys. Exposed studs, visible seams at part connections, and the occasional glimpse of LEGO's iconic logo remind me that the dark-faced enemies I defeat with my lightsaber will only shatter into pieces of plastic.

Considering the rapid development of technology and game development tools from 2007 to the present, it is not surprising that LEGO Star Wars: Skywalker Legends can completely compare the previous game. What's really surprising is that the studio didn't choose to simply and rudely use the original content, just fine-grained modeling. Instead, they completely redoed the gigs of these familiar scenes. For example, there is a cool scene in the preview where Darth Vader boards Leia's spaceship (the opening scene of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope) recreates the Sith Lord's strong appearance in Rogue One.

The new changes are not only reflected in the good-looking new CG animations, but also in the fact that many mission objectives and puzzles have been adjusted or completely redone. In the follow-up to my demo, we found ourselves in the Moses Eisley Spaceport, resisting the Imperial Stormtroopers as Chewbacca prepared to launch the Millennium Falcon.

In the original game, this scenario required the player to clear several waves of enemies before escaping on Han Solo's ship. But in this game, you'll not only need to fend off the swarms of Imperial Stormtroopers, but also help Chubaka repair the ship by solving puzzles between battles. This expansion allowed me to use the strengths of each character (such as Obi-Wan's Force) to assemble the cockpit and fixed sensors of the ship, and then install the cannon.

When I wasn't a spaceship repairman, I was able to experience the game's overhauled combat system. Over-the-shoulder gunfights are more deep and strategic, and imperial stormtrooper enemies have a variety of attack and defense methods, from standard machine gunners to snipers to heavy weapons. You can also aim your enemies more precisely, aiming at your feet if you want to see them jumping around in pain, or knocking off their helmets to expose their weaknesses. In addition, the game has a new and easy-to-understand bunker system, including a deforestable barrier that can be reconstructed.

Lightsabers and hand-to-hand combat have been similarly improved, with players no longer pressing the attack button and instead having to unleash powerful combos through a variety of different actions. If you use the same attack method for a long time, the enemy will start blocking your attacks, forcing you to change your strategy.

The same applies to lightsaber attack cycles, but you can use the Force to throw huge scene objects at unsuspecting enemies to increase the variety of attacks. Combine the diversity of the combat system to reap more challenges and opportunities, whether you're using a blaster gun, wielding a lightsaber, or bare-handed. The visuals of the battles are also great, with chain attacks that can produce a lot of smooth animations.

This has changed not only in combat, but also in the system for collecting spikes. As long as you reach a higher number of combos (the count will appear on the right-hand side of the screen), more spikes will be added to your total collection. LEGO Star Wars: Skywalker Saga also includes Köber Granules, a new high-value collection that is linked to the series' "True Jedi" system. In the previous game in this series, after collecting a certain number of inlays at each stage, the player will get a coveted golden Lego granule, as well as the "True Jedi" status. The system now measures in three phases, each of which boosts your True Jedi and unlocks a Köber particle.

More than just another shiny collection, they are also materials for the new character improvement system, which can be used to unlock your character's core abilities, which act on all characters, and class-based special abilities, which take effect on specific Star Wars prototype classes such as Smugglers, Bounty Hunters, Heroes, and Jedi Knights. For example, when I successfully landed in Tatooine with the Death Star Program, I unlocked The Sprint and got a 10% movement speed bonus. Collect another 15 Köber particles and I can level up this skill again to get a 30% bonus.

Near the end of the demo process, I only saved three Köber particles, and one was still one piece left to unlock the Smuggler class's "Battle Gliding" skill. While I was thrilled to fantasize about having this ability to overthrow a large area of imperial stormtroopers like a rolling bowling ball, and Han Solo's "Yahoo" echoed in my ears, unfortunately I could only experience this skill until the game was released on April 6th, and I wondered if it was worth the trouble of collecting so many particles.

Of course, given the rich content of this game, even if this skill is not very effective, you can turn to other ways to play. In addition to the contents of the film's nine legendary films, the game also includes more than 300 selectable characters, dozens of drivable vehicles, a huge free mode, and many other features and surprises that were not experienced during the trial, coupled with the ambitious DLC program, including the first season of The Mandalorian and the first day booster pack for Ranger Solo: Star Wars: A Tales of The Spider-Verse, and it may take fans longer to digest the work than It will take Sharak to taste its Last Supper.
