A few years ago, Chen Dabo (pseudonym), who was in his 60s, suffered from tracheal stenosis caused by esophageal cancer, and his symptoms improved after being urgently placed in a tracheal stent. However, in recent years, he has developed symptoms such as repeated coughing, sputum stickiness and difficulty coughing up, and shortness of breath. After Chen Dabo went to the Respiratory Department/Thoracic Oncology Department of the Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine of Southern Medical University for medical treatment, he learned that the problem was caused by the tracheal stent.

The tracheal stent is easy to place and difficult to take. After successfully removing the stent for Chen Dabo, Feng Qixiao, director of the Respiratory Department of the hospital, led the team to remind the public that if it is benign tracheal stenosis, it is not necessary to prefer the placement of tracheal stents.

The tracheal stent has been placed for too long, and in recent years there have been repeated lung infections

"Repeated lung infections caused my dad to suffer terribly every day, not having eaten a good meal, not sleeping a good day. In recent years, I have been trying to find experts to remove the stent, but in major hospitals, they all say that the stent is placed for too long, the difficulty of taking it out is extremely high, and the risk is extremely high! Uncle Chen's daughter said.

It is understood that in January 2017, Chen Dabo's esophageal cancer recurred and invaded the mediastinal lymph nodes and trachea, the main trachea was severely narrowed, and after the emergency insertion of the tracheal laminated stent (1.8 * 5cm), rescue radiotherapy was carried out, and the symptoms of dyspnea were significantly alleviated. Palliative chemoradiation was then performed, and the tumor was significantly reduced and did not enlarge.

However, since 2018, patients have repeatedly experienced symptoms such as cough, sputum viscous cough and shortness of breath, and in recent years, they need to be hospitalized every 2 or 3 months for anti-infection and sputum treatment.

Difficult tracheal stent removal surgery, successfully completed!

Professor Feng Qi pointed out that because Chen Dabo's laminated tracheal stent was placed for more than 4 years, the granulation tissue at both ends of the stent was hypertrophied and wrapped, the recovery line was broken by the biopsy forceps, and the stent retracted but fractured in multiple places, blocking the main airway, so the patient may die of suffocation at any time.

Partial rupture of the stent blocks the main trachea

After formulating a detailed and comprehensive surgical plan, feng Qi's director team performed a tracheal stent removal for Chen Dabo. First of all, part of the stent is broken by holmium laser, and then the broken metal wire is carefully clipped out using biopsy forceps, and the remaining laminated stents are successfully clipped out with foreign object forceps... It took nearly 2 hours and the surgery was successfully completed.

After the stent is removed

"Director Feng, you are really my great savior, thank you so much!" Uncle Chen, who had woken up, couldn't wait to give Director Feng a thumbs up on the operating table. After a short period of local repair treatment, Chen Dabo has been successfully discharged from the hospital. Before being discharged from the hospital, he went to the hospital to thank every medical staff of Director Feng's team, and even praised: "Director Feng is bold and meticulous, skilled, and took out the stent so quickly and safely, which gave me hope and courage to live!" ”

Patients and their families sent pennants of thanks

Tracheal stents are easy to place and difficult to take, and benign tracheal stenosis is not preferred unnecessarily

"In more than 20 years of clinical practice, I have often seen such cases." Feng Qixiao reminded, "Tracheal stents are different from vascular stents, tracheal stents are easy to put and not easy to take, and must be placed carefully." In particular, benign stenosis, stents must not be preferred to relieve airway stenosis. Airway stents should be used as temporarily recyclable as possible, and airway stents should not be left in place for a long time! ”

Feng Qi said that there are many drawbacks of long-term indwelling stents, such as stent metal fatigue and stent rupture, resulting in granuloma hyperplasia, local swelling and pain, cartilage destruction, local suppuration, compressed necrosis, etc., making patients miserable, the quality of life decreasing, and the family burden increasing. Therefore, when the stent is completed, the stent needs to be removed in time. (For more news, please pay attention to Yangcheng Pie pai.ycwb.com)
