Whispered Proverbs - Read the inscriptions of the Ji Wenda Gong artifacts

My seventh ancestor Ji Yun, the character Xiaolan, was born in the second year of Qing Yongzheng (1724) and died in the tenth year of Jiaqing (1805), Tan Wenda. Directly subordinate to The Xianxian of Hejian Province, the official to the Qing Dynasty Ceremonial Department Shangshu, the assistant university scholar, also served in the Zuo Du Yushi and other important positions, as an official through the Qianlong and Jiaqing dynasties. At the time of Qianlong, Wen Dagong was the chief compiler of the "Four Libraries and Complete Books", exhausting ancient literature and classics, and composing a vast sea of sutras, histories, sub-books, and collections, and making great contributions to preserving and sorting out ancient Chinese literature; the novel collection "Notes on Reading Wei Caotang" was passed down to the world, with the original intention of "persuasion and punishment", relying on ghosts and gods to express their own opinions and explain karma, and hundreds of strange things and events ruthlessly flogged the social reality behind the curtain of the so-called "Qianlong Prosperous World".

Also embodying Wen Dagong's ideological feelings are inscriptions engraved on brick platforms and tools.

Ancestors liked to hide stones, in addition to the "Reading Micro Grass Hall", there is another hall number "Ninety-Nine Yan Zhai", which shows that the Tibetan stones are quite abundant, and each Stone must be inscribed. Its value lies not only in these stones themselves, but also in pinning their own spirit on these stones, not directly, intended to be thorough, reflecting the wisdom and insight of a generation of Wenzong, looking like a torch, and taking the culture of material speech as the spirit.

According to Mr. Wang Minzhi, a scholar in Cangzhou, in addition to the Yan inscription of Wen Dagong, there are still nineteen pieces of study utensils, each of which also has an inscription. Originally packed in a five-drawer wooden box, one drawer was lost in the early years, and only four drawers remain. Each drawer is slotted, such as a small saw, a small axe, a wooden file, an iron, and a nickname (the same as "scale"), each with an inscription. According to the recollection of an elder of the family, I have seen the original of these gadgets, each one is exquisitely crafted, although it is not large, but it can be used as a library tool, this small toolbox was stored in the late Qing Dynasty in the Beijing Division "Kifu Xianzhe Ancestral Temple" (located in the present-day Beijing XuanwumenWaiXia Street No. 40 Xia xie street), after the founding of New China transferred to the Cultural Relics Bureau of the Ministry of Culture, in 1952 transferred to the Hebei Provincial Cultural Relics Management Committee, now the Hebei Provincial Cultural Relics Center.

Duanshi inherits the ancestral training

A self-composed poem on the "Yanming of the Shuntianxiang Examination School": "The article dares to be clear-eyed, and the autumn wind in the Liaohai Sea is ashamed of yousheng." Only a piece of stone was left in the bag, and it was knocked without a copper sound. "Note: The first sentence indicates that as the chief examiner of the examination, you can distinguish the level of the candidate's article." Liaohai Autumn Wind Shame Yousheng" a sentence, from the Tang Dynasty Li He poem "Do not see the year of the Liaohai Sea, where does the article cry autumn wind?" "It is a metaphor for the fall of the candidate's name. However, as the chief examiner, it is a great responsibility to select talents for the country. He showed that he loved Shi Yan, and was glad that there was no brass, indicating that he refused to pay bribes.

The inscription of the "Lower Rock Stone": "The stone is out of the whirlpool, and the age of The Age is many." Just not explicit, soft feet to grind, this is the inside and outside and the sum. "Note: The lower rock is one of the duanyan quarries. A stone vortex is a long stream of water that forms a deep depression in the stone. Condor: Refers to a lot. "Rigid and not explicit", "inside and outside" are all quoted from the meaning of the ancient saying "just in the middle and soft outside". Introduction: Refers to Gengsuke.

"Shape-like YanMing": "It is not square and not round, because of its nature, the solid difference is better than the carving." "Note: This stone is made of natural shaped stone that is not square and not round. Poor: refers to slightly; win: refers to victory, overtaking. The intended carved stone is slightly inferior to its natural shape.

There is also an inscription on the "Moon Pond Yan": "It is like a run, and if it is tried, it is just." Its appearance is idyllic and implicit. "In the anthropomorphic literary thinking, the principle of human behavior is revealed. He adheres to the right path and does not lose himself on the issue of great principles, but this is the principle of relying on wisdom to uphold, advocating that he be upright, but should not be too strong, grasp the measure, impure, soft on the outside and rigid on the inside. As he praised in another inscription, good stone is: "Firm is firm, but not stubborn." He still has the "regret" that he can test the gold, but he can't test the heart", these fantastic ideas, borrow things and words to send affection, and the true meaning of life is all in it.

The ruler saw has a proverb

The Ruler Ming says: "Keep the rules straight." "As a family motto of the Ji family, I exhort future generations to abide by the right path and abide by the code of conduct.

The "Little Title" said: "The old man folds and balances, so that the people do not argue, but they cannot make things weightless, and in the end it is better to hold on to this level." Note: Lao Nie refers to the Taoist founder Li Er, the word 聃. Folding: Refers to destroying the bucket, breaking the scale. This is a negative attitude of avoidance, while Confucianism advocates a standard of measurement, dividing the weight of the hierarchy, which can be extended to order, which is a positive idea of joining the WTO.

Nickname (same as "scale") ming

"Little Saw Ming" said: "Slim teeth, sharp and self-respecting." However, the roots are intertwined, and it is not the victory of Ru, and it is necessary to know whether there is a can or cannot be. Note: The small serrations are powerful and arrogant, but they cannot do anything about trees with crooked roots and intertwined branches, as a reminder that people should not be arrogant and self-respecting, and that anyone has strengths and weaknesses.

The "Cutting Knife Inscription" says: "When the cut is broken, it is uneven, and the sharp weapon is in the hand, and the difference is uneven." Note: "When it is broken, it is broken" means that what should be cut off must be cut off, and by extension it is a decisive measure. Quoted from the old saying "When the break continues, it is disturbed by it". The first Qi character in "Qi bu qi" is a verb meaning cut. The last sentence refers to: with a knife, even if it is uneven.

"Paste Brush Ming" said: "Paste and paper are in contact, but they can be both thick and thin." The cover is not too strong, the soft is not weak. "Note: This is an inscription engraved on the handle of the pulp brush. Matching: Refers to the paste and paper attached to each other. Weier (finger brush) is moderately soft and hard, so that the paste can be evenly brushed on the paper. The metaphor is that one is upright, but one should not be too strong; one should not be too cowardly.

The "Broom Inscription" says: "When the broom is bald, the dust is endless, but one day in the hand, it is whisked away in one day." "It is the motto of strict self-discipline and the courage to correct one's own mistakes."

The Zi ming of waiting (戥) says: "Although the tie is light, it is also necessary to make peace." Cover tens of millions of differences, born of the slightest distortion. "It means a lot. Etch is a miniature scale. The intention is that although the item is light, it must also be accurately weighed. "Yi" said: "The right thing, all the physics, the loss of a millimeter, the difference of a thousand miles, so the gentleman is cautious and started." "Milli-sudden: refers to the ancient tiny unit of measurement, ten suddenly for a thread, ten for a millimeter. Zero: Refers to the remainder of zero below the integer.

The Ping Chi Ming says: "The axe cannot penetrate the force of the axe, nor can it penetrate the axe force." The use of mutual resources is not more important than one bias. "The interdependence of the TD axe and the chisel, the latter two of which are negative and arbitrary, emphasize the dichotomy to see the problem.

The "Hard Brush Inscription" says: "The way to govern people is to avoid the fish; the way to cure oneself, then the dirt will be removed." Words are all right, and gentlemen think of them. "It embodies strict self-discipline.

The "Water Drop Inscription" says: "Near Zhu is red, near ink is black, and Shen Er is stained, don't be Desird." "Note: Water droplets refer to the water injection bottles used when researching ink, called yan drops. The last two sentences use this metaphor to be careful not to let black tarnish your character.

Iron File (left) and Ruler (right)

Living in the era of the harsh rule of the Qianlong Emperor, it affected his reception of people and things, as a Han chinese, circling among the nobles, it cannot be said that he was trying to survive in the cracks. These inscriptions are interesting to write, and the heart of the text is like water, and from them, they deeply feel that he is a man, an official, a writer, and a reason for things.

For a certain artifact to have a feeling, similar to the poetry of the object, to send affection to the object. As Shen Xianglong said in the "Essay on Words": "The works of yongwu are borrowing objects to allude to temperament." ...... Hidden in it, Si Susan is far away, not a thing. Another type of inscription is not a chant, but a far-reaching argument, such as writing in the "Fang Sheng Box Ming": "The upper and lower are concentric, the political reason is accomplished; the inside and outside are concentric, and the family is peaceful." I see that the husband of the two ambitions, from the beginning of self-interest and the end of self-surrender. Abstain, abstain, and do not misuse its cleverness. This is a reasonable quote that is "beneficial to persuasion and punishment", which attacks the social phenomenon of "the world's style is declining" at that time, which is of great practical significance. These inscriptions are all hand-picked up by Wenda when he was fair, these witty words, straight but not handsome, gentle but not handsome, everyone's handwriting, all under the wrist. Like his works, the subtle meaning of words, the words are pearlescent, allegorical wisdom, knowledge, cultivation in taste, easy to understand and contain profound philosophy and noble morality, anthropomorphic literary treatment gives the artifact character and life. This is enough to see his solemn, witty style and profound literary skills.

Unfortunately, apart from these remaining physical objects, most of them have been scattered. After the death of Duke Wenda, the thirteenth volume of the Collected Works of Ji Wenda, compiled by the eldest grandson Ji Shuxin in the fourteenth year of Jiaqing, all published the contents of the inscriptions, which is indeed a blessing in misfortune. In 2001, Professor Liu Dihe of Beijing Normal University forwarded to me a copy of the original rubbing stored by Mr. Qi Gong, which made me have the honor of seeing the physical rubbings of the above-mentioned gadgets. The rubbings are printed with stamps such as "Yanquan Tibetan Vessel", "Zaoqiang Wang Clan Tibetan Vessel" and "Accompanied Plum Hand Tuo", etc., and the rubbing is very careful, even the subtleties such as serrations and the decorative patterns on the tools are very clear, and it is worthy of being a master of all-shaped rubbing. The Cangzhou Ji Xiaolan Research Association has also done a lot of research and promotion work, and Mr. Wang Minzhi and Sun Jian have also devoted a lot of effort to the relics and inscription annotations, thanking all the predecessors for preserving such a precious cultural heritage for us.

In the inscriptions of these artifacts of the ancestors, I have a slight understanding of the unbiased philosophy of life, and these proverbs of praise, warning, and discipline of the heart, and the correct way of cultivating the world are also inscribed in the heart. Some of the inscriptions of the Present Jinglu Wenda Gong were passed down from generation to generation for the Ji family rules and regulations.

Yu Jin gave a small poem to Zhizhi.

Wen xin is more wise, and the yaxing instrument is engraved.

The words know the deep meaning, and the words are seen in a thousand.

Duanshi inherits the ancestral training, and the ruler saw has a proverb.
