Finnish artist Matti Kujasalo has been working to solve the problem of systematic constructivist art.
He developed his own unique grammar and created an expressive and surprising visual language based on its rules. In the mid-1970s he developed his own style of work with short straight lines as the main element. Since the 1990s, the works have been continuously arranged on the screen in the form of horizontal, vertical and even diagonal lines, and the works are mainly based on reduced black and white contrasts, and its untitled circular works are also created by strong color contrasts and connecting numerous squares composed of vertical and horizontal intersecting short lines. The flickering form of the work does not provide a direction for reading because it is cyclical, but the purpose is not so much to stimulate the viewer's eyes as to construct a whole surface through various combinations of units such as numerous white stroke structures and intersections between many squares and divided black bars.
He was impressed by American abstract artists such as Ad Reinhardt and Josef Albers, who learned about their work during their stays in the United States in 1967 and 1970, and began making strictly logical series of paintings using acrylic paint and tape. As he said in an interview, the third dimension often hinders the manifestation of hallucinations. In this combination of circular format and black-and-white modular connection, abstract visualizations of thematic phenomena such as global networks allow viewers to try to trace their secret sequence on the surface of the picture.
