Intel releases a new standard for power supply: graphics card limit power supply 600W

Recently, Intel released a new ATX 3.0 power specification, which is also the biggest change since the ATX 2.0 version in 2003, preparing for future PCIe 5.0 graphics cards.

The ATX 3.0 power specification changes very much, and as we have summarized before, there are two core points.

First, the new 12VHPWR 16-pin interface can directly provide up to 600W power supply capacity for PCIe 5.0 graphics cards and expansion cards, as well as 450W, 300W, 150W three grades, and will be marked on the power supply input interface specific power.

The new interface has a total of 16 pins, of which 12 are responsible for power supply and 4 are responsible for sideband signals, the latter of which is used for direct communication between the power supply and the PCIe 5.0 graphics card to determine the power supply limit.

According to the specification, a power supply with a maximum power of more than 450W must be equipped with a 12VHPWR interface as standard.

The second is to update the PCIe GEM 5.0 power supply deviation limit released in November 2021, which is more suitable for PCIe 5.0 expansion cards, including new DC output voltage regulation, which is convenient for managing new power supply deviation requirements.

Other key points of the new specification:

- The power supply must be able to withstand 175,200 switches per year without damage;

- Upgrade the low load efficiency, the efficiency at 10W or 2% maximum nominal power shall not be less than 60%, and the recommended rate shall not be less than 70%;

- 12V circuit up to 12.2V, allowing for lower dropouts;

- Increase the voltage slew rate of the instantaneous load, +12V circuit to reach 2-5 times;

- Increase instantaneous power supply peak, 10% of the working cycle, 100 microseconds time, withstand 200% of the nominal power;

- Added Cybenetics certification in addition to 80PLUS...

Recently, ASUS, Cool Extreme, Gigabyte, MSI and other manufacturers have successively released power supply products that meet the ATX 3.0 specification.

At the same time, Intel also updated and released the ATX12VO 2.0 power specification, which is convenient for the industry to better design power supplies, motherboards, and especially reduce standby power consumption.

ATX12VO 2.0 adds I_PSU% functionality to the desktop platform, which was previously supported by mobile platforms and servers.

It is aimed at SFF small hosts that cannot install large power supplies, making it easy for OEMs to choose the right size for system needs.

MSI has been the first to release a small host with atx12VO 2.0 specification power supply, namely Creator P100A and MPG Trident AS, all equipped with Intel 12th generation Core processors, up to the optional i7-12700.
