Peru's Constitutional Court on March 17 decided to reinstate the December 2017 amnesty granted to former President Fujimori, meaning that Fujimori, who is currently serving a prison sentence, will be released. Fujimori was elected President of Peru in 1990 and re-elected twice. In 2009, Fujimori was sentenced to 25 years in prison by Peru's supreme court for murder and kidnapping. In 2017, then-Peruvian President Kuczynski decided to grant an amnesty to Fujimori on the grounds that he suffered from an "incurable degenerative" disease. In 2018, Peru's Supreme Court announced the cancellation of the pardon previously granted to Fujimori, and Fujimori was arrested and imprisoned again.
