In more than 70 years of professional career, he has saved the lives of countless children with the scalpel in his hand.
There are countless labels about him, including the father of Pediatric Surgery in China, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and so on. The medical saint is now 101 years old and is still active in front-line positions. He is Zhang Jinzhe, a centenarian who is determined to carry forward pediatric surgery.
Zhang Jinzhe
Zhang Jinzhe was born in 1920 in Ninghe County, Tianjin. With the outbreak of the Japanese invasion of China, 17-year-old Zhang Jinzhe had the idea of joining the army, but due to vision problems, Zhang Jinzhe was eliminated. But that didn't hit Jang's confidence.
After joining the army, Zhang Jinzhe wrote a letter of illness and wrote that "not for good looks, rather for good doctors." With this sentence, 18-year-old Zhang Jinzhe was admitted to the medical department of Yenching University in Beiping. At the age of 21, after graduating from Peking Yenching University, Zhang Jinzhe entered Peking Union Medical College, Shanghai St. John's University School of Medicine, and Shanghai Medical College.

After completing his studies, Zhang Jinzhe, who is 27 years old, officially worked in the Surgery Department of the Affiliated Hospital of Peking University School of Medicine. Coinciding with the end of the War of Resistance Against Japan, there was a peaceful scene in the country, but at this time, Zhang Jinzhe felt another form of sadness.
Due to the war, the diseases suffered by children in this period are no longer simple colds. It is some difficult and complicated diseases that are helpless, such as diphtheria, subcutaneous gangrene, scarlet fever and other appalling diseases.
According to the medical means at that time, this highly contagious disease was extremely unlikely to be cured. Basically, one in every five newborns will die in infancy, and in the vast country of China, no doctor can cure this disease, and over time, the hospital is not willing to accept such a child.
Whenever he saw such a picture, Zhang Jinzhe's eyes were full of tears, but he was helpless. Years later, looking back on that time, Zhang Jinzhe was also full of regrets, if only he had the current medical skills at that time.
Late one night, Zhang Jinzhe met his physics teacher in middle school during the night shift. And the teacher held his daughter who had just turned one year old in his hand, and before he could reminisce, Zhang Jinzhe found that this one-year-old child unfortunately suffered from diphtheria.
If you want to survive, you must cut the trachea. But where does Zhang Jinzhe, an intern, know this, so he began to frantically ask people who could do the operation. But without exception, the answer is no. No one does surgery on a child, and no one uses anesthesia. Little by little, time passed, and this young life passed away with a lack of breathing.
In 1948, neonatal subcutaneous gangrene broke out. The contagious and contagious nature of the horror has left hospitals helpless. At the time, the lethality of such cases was 100%, and no hospital could completely cure the disease.
At that time, Zhang Jinzhe watched the children die one after another, and his heart was full of despair. In order to be able to obtain an effective response plan, Zhang Jinzhe did not sleep and finally wrote a proven theoretical plan.
But at that time, no one believed him at all, there was no way, Zhang Jinzhe could only use his three-year-old daughter who had already suffered from subcutaneous gangrene to open the knife. At the same time, after Zhang Jinzhe gained practical experience in his daughter, he made public the treatment of subcutaneous gangrene. Two years later, treatments for subcutaneous gangrene spread across China, and the mortality rate was reduced from 100 percent to less than 5 percent.
Zhang Jinzhe, who is in his 20s, after experiencing these things, is determined to create pediatric surgery and help more newborns avoid the suffering of disease. But who could have listened to him at the time? In an era when there is not enough to eat, who cares about the health of children?
In 1949, New China was formally established, and a national health work conference was officially held. During this meeting, the problem of childhood diseases was seriously concerned, and the ability to build a life-saving pediatric surgery department was already an imminent problem.
In 1950, the 30-year-old Jang Jin-chul hung a sign of pediatric surgery for the first time at the door of the clinic. In the ward, there were only 5 beds, which was the greatest support that Jang Jinzhe could get in those days.
Surgery? Pediatric surgery? In those days, no one believed these two words at all. Compared with the busyness of other departments, Zhang Jinzhe was extremely deserted here, and this situation lasted for half a year before it was broken by sudden strange things.

In 2015, a child with a belly as big as a ball was taken to Beijing Children's Hospital for rescue. The doctor in charge of the treatment is Zhang Jinzhe, who is 95 years old. People around him pointed out to Zhang Jinzhe, thinking that an old man in his 90s could see a doctor and save people.
In the face of doubts, Zhang Jinzhe did not refute much, but repeatedly observed on the child's swollen stomach, and then underwent surgery. With the tumor in the abdomen completely removed, the child is completely out of danger of life.

At that time, foreign countries had begun to carry out central intravenous anesthesia technology, and the mainland did not even have a decent silicone tube. Even if you want to buy it, you can't buy it at all. No way, Zhang Jinzhe decided to teach himself pediatric anesthesia, and finally one day created intramuscular thiopental sodium basic anesthesia.
According to relevant statistics, just the operation of pediatric appendix, Zhang Jinzhe has created a record of 15,000 deaths in 30 years. For more than 70 years, Zhang Jinzhe has used the scalpel in his hand to "snatch" the lives of hundreds of thousands of children from the hands of the god of death. And for 34 consecutive years, he went to Tianjin for free clinics.
More than 70 years of practice, in Zhang Lao's "small workshop" of only four square meters, nearly 60 inventions were born, including the famous Zhang's forceps, Zhang's membrane, Zhang's valve, etc. Zhang Lao believes that there is no distinction between noble and lowly in diseases, there is no distinction between noble and lowly in medical technology, and there is no distinction between noble and lowly for patients.

In his lifetime, Zhang Lao published more than 3,000 papers and wrote more than 50 books. However, all this money was used as a fund for the children of poor families to see a doctor.
After more than 70 years of practice, Mr. Zhang told us what medical ethics is, and whenever he met a child, he would put the stethoscope in his hand and wait for the heat to listen to the child. In his office, the laughter was always incessant.
Silver-haired and smiling, he did this to everyone. On their white coats, there was a small sign with the title name written on it. But every time, Mr. Zhang would enlarge and bold his name and rewrite it one by one, just because he was afraid that the patient would not be able to see his name clearly.

But what is not known is that when the old man was 79 years old, most of his stomach had been removed. At the age of 90, two shadows were found in the lungs and a pacemaker was used.
Even so, Zhang Lao still works in front-line posts. In 2000, Zhang Jinzhe received the Dennis Brown Gold Medal from the Royal Medical Society in Italy, which is internationally recognized as the "Nobel Prize" of the pediatric surgery community. In 2010, at the age of 90, Zhang Jinzhe was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the World Society of Pediatric Surgery.
