name

Government organizations in Iran are often represented by a one-word name (often denoting their function) rather than an acronym or abbreviation, while the general public generally refers to the IRGC as Sepâh.

history

The Revolutionary Guards Corps of Iran was established on May 5, 1979, to consolidate power and suppress the state's armed forces previously loyal to the Shah of Iran. Therefore, the main function of Iran's Revolutionary Guards is to serve to ensure the integrity of the regime. The force was established on 5 May 1979 in accordance with the Great Ayatollah Homeni Religious Decree. According to Article 150 of the Iranian Constitution, the status of the Self-Appointed Guard is equivalent to that of other armed forces. The Constitution also gave the Revolutionary Guards the functions of maintaining sovereign integrity and political independence.

As the main armed force of the conservative Islamic regime in Iran at present, the Revolutionary Guards effectively guarantee the regime's independent control over social and military forces and become an important tool for ensuring legal integrity and exerting its will. The Revolutionary Guards underwent two transformations, one during the Iran-Iraq War and the other in the politics of the Khomeini era. The Iran-Iraq War gave the Revolutionary Guards practical experience and the expansion of the Revolutionary Guards' personnel and equipment, which quickly developed into the main armed force in Iran. During the reign of Homeni, the Revolutionary Guards were highly trusted and appreciated by Homeni himself because of his outstanding performance in the war. In contrast, the old armies of the previous dynasties were purged, reformed, and controlled, and the strength of the Revolutionary Guards was relatively transformed. A radical change occurred in September 1985, when the ruler Khomeini ordered the creation of the Army, Navy and Air Force of the Revolutionary Guards in order to expand and strengthen the Revolutionary Guards. Since then, the Revolutionary Guards have had their own, complete land, sea and air forces, and on the other hand, Iran has become one of the few countries in the world with two land, sea and air armies.

organization

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Iranian Defence Forces form the regular armed forces of Iran, with three services, navy, land and air, and currently have about 125,000 people. The Revolutionary Guards have mastered Iran's "highest" and "lowest" military forces. On the one hand, most of Iran's missile forces, including ballistic missiles and weapons of mass destruction such as biological and chemical weapons, are in the hands of Iran's Revolutionary Guards. Iran's border defense work and the protection of most government agencies are the responsibility of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. On the other hand, the Revolutionary Guards, which oversee the large militia organization "Barsky", are armed with only light weapons, about 400,000 people in peacetime, and can be estimated to mobilize up to 1 million in wartime, and are considered to be one of the main forces to launch guerrilla warfare and street warfare. The Quds Force is a special force used by Iran's Revolutionary Guards to carry out overseas missions.

Economically, Iran's own military industry is mainly the responsibility of the Revolutionary Guards. The Golbo Group was formerly an engineering unit of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps. This unit was mainly responsible for digging trenches and repairing bunkers during the Iran-Iraq War. After the war, it became a large company involved in the fields of industrial and civil construction, industry and mining, finance, agriculture, design and consulting. The Revolutionary Guards control 60 border crossings in southern Iran, 57 percent of Iran's imports and 30 percent of its exports, in addition to oil, and more than 560 trading companies abroad. From pharmaceuticals and telecommunications to the oil industry, it is deeply involved in Iran's economic life. It is a huge commercial monopoly organization.

controversy

The nature of Iran's Revolutionary Guards has made it a paramilitary organization driven by a certain political ideology and has allowed its control to penetrate into all strata of society. As a result, the Revolutionary Guards inevitably became embroiled in the Iranian government's related turmoil with dissidents.

economy

In fact, the Revolutionary Guards have always enjoyed special political and economic power in Iran, so this armed force is not only an armed force, but also a powerful economic force. In particular, after Ahmadinejad, who served in the Revolutionary Guards, was elected president, the Revolutionary Guards entered the business world in a large number of ways, becoming a huge "business empire". Founded in 1990 as the engineering unit of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, the Gorbo Group, the most famous Revolutionary Guard company, controls a large part of Iran's import and export business and has more than $12 billion in contracts in recent years. At one point, Ahmadinejad issued orders to expand the powers of the Revolutionary Guards and take control of Iran's economic institutions as soon as possible. One of the orders was that representatives of the Revolutionary Guards should sit on the board of directors of the Central Bank. According to this order, the board of directors of the central bank cannot make any decision without the consent of the Revolutionary Guards, especially loans in the amount of more than 1 million US dollars, which can never be issued without the consent of the Revolutionary Guards. The second order is that representatives of the Revolutionary Guards participate in the State Review and Planning Organization, a regulatory body of Iranian telecommunications agencies and companies, headquartered within the Iranian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, which is also represented by the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence. Obviously, the economic power of the Revolutionary Guards was pushed into an overwhelming position.

The Revolutionary Guard Corps' power to operate economically can actually be traced back to the islamic Revolution not long after its founding and during the Iran-Iraq War. As a result of the arms embargo imposed on Iran by Western countries, Iran was forced to reorganize and develop its own military industry, which was mainly the responsibility of the Revolutionary Guards, so the Revolutionary Guards were involved in Iran's defense industry very early. After the end of the Iran-Iraq War, in order to further accelerate the reconstruction of the Iranian economy, the Revolutionary Guards also threw themselves into the tide of economic construction and became a unique force. At that time, in order to resettle some of the retired Revolutionary Guard soldiers, Iran decided to allow the Revolutionary Guards to set up various companies, including civilian areas, taking this opportunity to establish the first company, the director of the Revolutionary Guard's intelligence bureau, Major General Ridoy, to repair various equipment destroyed in the war to serve the social economy. In particular, it should be pointed out here that the engineering unit of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, which is mainly responsible for digging trenches and repairing bunkers, after the Iran-Iraq War, has become a large company involved in industrial and civil construction, finance, agriculture, consulting and other fields, and eventually became a representative economic institution of the Revolutionary Guards. The Golbo Group has strong ties to the government. It receives a large number of lucrative contracts from government departments each year, including the development of multibillion-dollar natural gas fields, natural gas pipeline construction projects, and even the construction of subway lines and various civil engineering projects.

Most of the huge government expenditure projects and social and civilian projects must be undertaken by companies under the Revolutionary Guards such as the Golbo Group, and this economic activity has greatly stimulated the development and growth of the economic power of the Revolutionary Guards. Today, Iran's Revolutionary Guards control 60 border crossings in southern Iran, control 57 percent of Iran's imports and 30 percent of its exports in addition to oil, and have nearly 600 affiliated trading companies abroad. The Revolutionary Guards, which also control Iran's pillar industries of pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, and oil, are deeply involved in Iran's economic life, and are a huge commercial monopoly organization, which is tantamount to a powerful "business empire."
