Yuan Ming, born in 1958, joined the army at the age of 19.
Many articles say that Yuan Ming is a Mongolian from Yunnan, which is not true.
Because according to the "Honghe Network" directly managed by the Propaganda Department of the Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture Prefecture Party Committee in Yunnan On July 24, 2020, the news entitled "Yunnan Provincial Veterans Affairs Department Visited the Condolence Group to Carry Out Condolences in Mongolia" showed that Yuan Ming was a native of Yangcheng, Shanxi, and joined the army in March 1978.
Therefore, Yuan Ming is a native of Yangcheng, Shanxi, not a Mongolian from Yunnan.

In 1979, yuan Ming joined the army for less than a year to participate in the self-defense counterattack against Vietnam with the troops, and because of the bravery and tenacity of Yuan Ming in the course of the battle, after the war, Yuan Ming, a new soldier who had participated in the war for less than a year, won the third class merit and was escorted to the military academy to study.
After graduating from the military academy, Yuan Ming was assigned to the 199th Division of the 67th Army of the People's Liberation Army, which has a glorious history, as the deputy company commander of the division's reconnaissance company.
In May 1985, yuan ming's 67th army went to the laoshan front to take over the rotational warfare troops of the Nanjing Military Region, at this time, Yuan Ming had to "drive away" his wife, who had only been visiting relatives in the army for two days.
The 67th Army was only able to take over the defense, and the Vietnamese army on the opposite side came to a dismount, and the 211 heights were taken by the Vietnamese army from the 67th Army.
Highland 211 was a position at the forefront of the Nala area at that time, a high ground seized from the Vietnamese army by the rotational combat troops of the Southern Military Region during the round battle, with three posts on it, which were held by a platoon of troops during the battle. In late May 1985, the 67th Army and the Yugoslav Military District rotated the troops, and on May 21, the change of defense was completed. The 595th Regiment of the 199th Division of the 67th Army took over The 211 heights from the round-robin units of the Confederate Military District.

However, the Vietnamese soldiers who were seized by the rotational combat units of the Southern Military Region were not willing to be taken away by the People's Liberation Army, and Vietnam, which had found out the rotation law of the People's Liberation Army in the course of the long-term rotation battle, had secretly planned the "211 Highland" retake battle as early as 2 months before the 67th Army and the RotationAlcial Combat Unit of the Southern Military Region changed their defenses.
Thus, on May 31, 1985, the Vietnamese army launched a surprise attack with a battalion of troops on the garrison of the 199th Division of the 67th Army, which was unstable, bearing in mind that the 211 garrison was only the size of a reinforced platoon.
In general, the troops of the 67th Army stationed in 211 were not stable, and under the circumstance that the enemy was not familiar with the situation, the position was not familiar, and the infantry and artillery coordination were not familiar, they withdrew from the enemy and withstood the Vietnamese battalion-sized attack, did not let the Vietnamese army plot succeed, really already very good, and did not disgrace the glorious military history of the 67th Army.
However, after all, it was outnumbered and the troops were at an absolute disadvantage, so there were still two posts that were taken by the Vietnamese army.
After more than thirty years, today it can be said calmly that if two posts are lost in the case of an outnumbered enemy, they will be lost, as long as they are fully prepared to take them back later, after all, the 211 Heights were originally taken from the Hands of the Vietnamese Army by the round combat troops of the Southern Military Region.
However, at that time, the loss of two posts was a big deal.
Scenarios of war against Vietnam
After all, why were the brother troops able to seize the position from the Vietnamese army, and why did you lose two posts in the blink of an eye when they were handed over to you?
Not to mention the hype that the Vietnamese side is adding fuel to the fire.
As a result, not only did it alarm the commander of the 67th Army, but also the Kunming Military Region and its former commanders and even the head of the headquarters.
In order to avoid the Vietnamese side from making a fuss about this matter, the 67th Army gave the 199th Division a death order to retake the two posts lost on the 211 heights as soon as possible.
However, the first operation failed due to too much haste and the terrain of The 211 Heights.
In 1985, on September 1, under the personal organization and command of the commander of the 199th Division, led by Yuan Ming, deputy company commander of the division's reconnaissance company, and He Guangming, deputy instructor, a carefully selected 17-man assault detachment was formed to secretly touch the No. 3 post of Highland 211 to lurk, familiarize themselves with the enemy situation and terrain on the highlands, and wait for the opportunity to launch an attack.
On September 8, the commando team used the rain and fog as a cover, called for the artillery support of the People's Liberation Army through the radio, and unexpectedly launched an attack on the Vietnamese positions during the day, and in only 12 minutes, completely annihilated the Vietnamese troops on the two lost posts of No. 1 and No. 2, and killed and wounded 14 Vietnamese troops on the 227 heights closely connected to them, the commando team only slightly wounded 2 people, and recaptured the No. 1 and No. 2 posts occupied by the Vietnamese in one fell swoop, fighting a beautiful annihilation battle.
There is also a tidbit here, according to the recollections of the relevant personnel, the commando captain at that time was not the original Ming, but the commander of the division's reconnaissance company.
However, Yuan Ming considered that the company commander was about to marry his fiancée, and did not have actual combat experience, so at the meeting of officers who selected the commando commander, he offered to be more suitable for the commando captain than the company commander.

The reason why Yuan Ming was a combat hero was not only because he captured the Vietnamese position in 12 minutes and completely annihilated the Vietnamese defenders; but also because he had left safety to his comrades-in-arms and seized the danger of bloodshed and sacrifice into his own hands.
Because this time the annihilation battle was very beautiful (the first battle had 200 soldier casualties), the commandos were awarded all their meritorious service for their outstanding achievements, and Hara Ming was awarded the title of combat hero.
It is worth mentioning that after the 199th Division regained complete control of the 211 heights, the Vietnamese army also launched a fierce counterattack on the 211 heights, but under the precision attack of the defenders who had prepared for the long time and the artillery fire in the rear of the People's Liberation Army, more than 300 Vietnamese troops were killed, and the wounds were several times greater. In the end, the heavily damaged Vietnamese had to formally abandon the scramble for Hill 211.
Returning to the battle hero Yuan Ming, as mentioned earlier, only 2 of the 17 commandos were wounded, 1 of whom was the commando leader Yuan Ming, and a fragment of a Vietnamese shell that exploded at the mouth of the No. 1 post just hit yuan Ming, who was wounded at the time to the wounded commando squad leader Liu Fuling, who was directly blind in his right eye and injured his right hand.
After this battle, Yuan Ming did not go north with the old troops, but stayed in the Red River State.
When Yuan Ming retired in 2004, he was 46 years old when he was deputy chief of staff of the Mengzi Military Subdistrict of the Yunnan Provincial Military Region.
There is no doubt that if Yuan Ming had not been injured, he would have been able to take on a more important job and would not have retired early due to injury at the age of 46.
After retiring from the army, Yuan Ming did not choose to return to his hometown of Shanxi, but stayed in Mengzi City to live.
