The oldest squid fossil to date, named "Biden," is not the first U.S. president to have this honor.
Recently, american paleontologist Christopher Whalen found that a fossil of a squid at the Royal Ontario Museum in Canada, dating from about 330-323 million years ago, is believed to be the ancestor of the oldest known ghost slug (vampire squid) and octopus, and is named Syllipsimopodi bideni, from the name of current US President Joseph Biden.
Dr. Whalen, the author of the paper, said that the name was inspired by Joseph Biden, both to commemorate his presidency and to be encouraged by President Biden's plan to tackle climate change and fund scientific research, and believed that politicians should listen to scientists more.
Biden is not the first president to "receive this honor" when it comes to naming species by name.
