Xudu Daily was founded in June 1946 by Wang Zhifu (also known as Wang Peiliang, then 478 years old, a native of Jia County), a former physical education and art teacher at Xuchang Private Jinde Middle School. The site is in the North Wang Family Courtyard on Xitou Road, Wenhua Street (more than ten rooms of the house with the surname of Wang are leased). The newspaper had no funds and was very rudimentary, with only an old radio with an antenna and headphones, a lithography machine, and some broken tables and chairs. Radios are used exclusively by editors to receive incoming drafts, while lithographs are used to print newspapers daily.
The main members of this newspaper are: the president Wang Zhifu (graduated from Henan Art Division), who has been a primary and secondary school teacher in Xuchang for many years. Editor Li Junsheng, ancestral home of Nantunli Village, Xuchang County. He grew up poor and studied at home after graduating from primary school. At the age of twenty, he became a primary school teacher, and at the age of twenty-six, he went to the Rural Business Daily newspaper as an accountant, a clerk, and a record news editor. Later, he worked as an editor in Justice Daily, Xuchang Daily, and Xudu Daily. After resigning in September 1947, he returned to the education sector and returned home from illness. I (Kwan Yoon-jin) work as a field correspondent for the newspaper. In addition to the three of us, there were Wang Zhaoxiang (a native of Xuchang County's old Wuying Village, who was about forty years old at the time), Liu Hongren (in his twenties), Li Junliang (in his thirties), Huang Wandong, who was in charge of printing, Yu Mingwu, who was in charge of general affairs, and Hai Yin, who delivered newspapers. Wang Zhifu did not work much in the newspaper office, and often went out to engage in outreach and raise funds to maintain the status quo of the newspaper. When the president is out, all affairs (including editing) in the company are taken care of by Li Junsheng.
I was in charge of covering local news, and every day I went out with Li Ji'an, Kou Zhuoran, and Zhang Shijie, reporters of Jianguo Daily, and Ma Jinzhang, Shi Mingyi, and Liu Piyang, reporters of Xinmin Daily, and went out to conduct interviews. Every day. The newspaper has a small garden and few news, so it prints and distributes only more than 400 copies a day, and the distribution locations are In Chencheng, Xiangxian, Linying, Baofeng, Lushan and other counties.
More than a month after the newspaper was published, the president hired two supplement editors: one was Li Guangya, a native of Zhenping County, who was about 46 or 7 years old at the time, and who was highly myopic in both eyes. I remember once when he was busy writing, he suddenly stopped writing and stood up, took a fly beat and took a picture of the hot water bottle with full attention. When I saw this, I rushed forward to stop it and said, "That's a little ink, not a fly." "This is also his characteristic!" The other is Yu Yaomen, a Chinese language teacher at Jinde Middle School. At the same time, two reporters were also hired, one was Wang Canzhang, also known as Wang Tuo, who was more than twenty years old. One is Li Yurui, also known as Li Xinkuan, who is nearly thirty years old.
The four men worked for just over a month, all resigning because they were unpaid. Half a year later, the circulation of Xudu Daily dropped sharply, from more than 400 copies to about 200 copies. In addition, the poor printing quality, such as running ink, blurred handwriting, dirty layout and other problems, led to the deterioration of Xudu Daily, the prospects are bleak.
At the very short time when Xudu Daily was very poor in funds and facing bankruptcy, in the late spring of 1947, the "god of living wealth", the famous Yu opera actor Chang Xiangyu, and Ma Tiande, who played with her, came from Xi'an to Xuchang at the invitation of Wang Zhifu to perform voluntary performances to support Xudu Daily. After only a short break, they began to rehearse the repertoire, put up posters, sell tickets and other pre-performance preparation activities. In order to thank Chang Xiangyu for his selfless support to Xudu Daily, the next day after the theater arrived at noon at the Wanfulou Restaurant in Koujia Lane, the president set up a banquet to entertain Chang Xiangyu and his wife. Present at the ceremony were Wu Xietang, commissioner of the Fifth Administrative District of Xuchang; Song Min, governor of Xuchang County (Zi Manjun, a native of Anhui Province), Geng Shaogong, secretary of the county party department; Yang Xinli, secretary general of the Three Youth League; Zhang Guanru , police chief ;Character Yimin, a native of Yichuan County); and Jiang Bingnan , captain of the gendarmerie corps (a baoding person), and I was also invited to attend the banquet. The next day, the feast was reported in the newspaper.
On the third day of Chang Xiangyu's arrival in Xuchang, he began to perform on the Samsung Stage in Datong Street, Nanguan, and his reputation was greatly enhanced, causing a sensation in Xuchang's urban and rural areas. So the people who came to me for preferential treatment of admission tickets flocked to me, and the president saw profit and forgot righteousness, loved money as fate, ate his own preface, regarded the ticket as heavy money, strictly controlled, miserly to the extreme, and felt embarrassed.
Thus the two of us had the fiercest argument, and it was difficult for us to reconcile. I offered my resignation and asked to leave the newspaper.
At first, the king did not allow it, but after that, he hired Guo Youwei, and I resigned.
After I left the newspaper, it was reported that Chang Xiangyu acted here for half a month and donated more than 9,000 yuan to Xudu Daily. Since then, the newspaper has a fund, and Wang Zhifu not only has a high spirit, but also adds a lead printing machine, a copper mold, a casting furnace, and other necessary tools for printing, and perfects the printing equipment. The length of the newspaper was also expanded, from eight open two pages of lithography to four open and four pages of lead print, the layout is clear and eye-catching, quite praised by subscribers. The newspaper staff also increased to nineteen, most of whom were Wang Zhifu's new relatives, friends or compatriots from Yujia County, in order to consolidate his system. Former editor Lee Jun-sheng also resigned in September. Wang also hired an editor named Luo Duanben (a native of Xuchang North Avenue, deceased).
Since then, Xudu Daily has had sufficient staff, money and wealth, and its reputation has been greatly enhanced. The Xudu Daily, which had always served the Kuomintang reactionaries, disappeared with the rumbling sound of the cannons that liberated the ancient city of Xuchang on December 15 of that year.
