DDR5 is probably the most controversial memory in history (not considering short-lived RDRAM), the price is high, the performance improvement is limited, and it is indeed not a better choice at the moment, but this does not mean that DDR5 is useless.
Recently, AnandTech tested the 12th generation Core entry-level model i3-12300 at the same time, by the way, a detailed comparison of the performance of DDR5 and DDR4.
The frequency and timing used for the test are DDR5-4800 CL and DDR4-3200 CL22, which are the parameters of the JEDEC standard specification and the most mainstream specification at present.
Looking at the benchmark first, there are 35 different projects.
In most of the tests, the gap between DDR5 and DDR4 is very small, not more than 5%, and many or even no different.
But there are some exceptions, notably WinRAR, where DDR5 leads by as much as 21.7 percent because of its high reliance on memory bandwidth.
In addition, DDR5 led nearly 9% in the AppTimer test, and CineBench R23 and GeekBench 5 led 8.3% and 13.0% in the two multithreaded tests, respectively.
Next is the game test, a total of three models, all looking at the average frame rate and minimum frame percentage at 1080p and 4K resolutions.
DDR5 can really bring gaming performance improvements, but most of them only look like 3-7FPS.
The average frame rate of Far Cry 5's 1080p quality is the most varied, reaching 15FPS, an amplitude of 12.3%, and Borderlands 3 looks optimized, up to 8.5%.
In general, DDR5 memory does have certain advantages in some scenarios, but the general amplitude is small, and it is not enough to really make people upgrade.
Perhaps in the era of Intel 13th generation Core and AMD Zen4, as the DDR5 memory frequency and timing specifications continue to improve, the price is gradually mainstreamed, and it can begin to be popularized.
