Professor Bian Duhong, who is now in his 90s, is an obstetrics and gynecology expert who was trained in the early days of Shanghai Red House Hospital and is now well-known in the southwest region.
Growing up in the war, he went to Shanghai to study medicine after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War
Bian Duhong was born in 1928 on the outskirts of Changsha, when he was 10 years old, the Japanese army burned Changsha, the whole city was destroyed, Bian Duhong only got the countryside to avoid chaos, from primary school to high school, he successively went to several distant schools "wandering study", until the second year after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, he was admitted to the 6-year undergraduate department of medicine of Shanghai Medical College with excellent results and went to Shanghai to study.
Shanghai Medical College has strong teachers, rigorous academics and a strong academic atmosphere, where Bian Duhong learned systematic medical knowledge and laid a solid medical foundation.
After graduation, Bian Duhong was assigned to work at the Red House Hospital. Professor Wang Shuzhen, one of the founders of obstetrics and gynecology in China at that time, served as the dean, and had strict requirements for the doctors in the hospital, but did not hesitate to praise, and gave many encouragement and praise to Bian Duhong, who had the spirit of innovative research and dedication. In addition to doing a good job in treating diseases and saving people, Bian Duhong also actively published medical treatises, translated foreign medical articles, participated in the rescue of the troops, and also won military merit. In 1956, he was awarded one of the 100 Advanced Health Workers in Shanghai.
Went to Chongqing to support the development of western medicine with his life
In the 1950s, due to the imbalance in the development of medicine in the eastern and western parts of the motherland, the remote western region needed talents from all walks of life. In 1956, Bian Duhong and his wife were happily married, and in 1957, Bian Duhong responded to the call of the state, left the Red House Hospital, bid farewell to the favorable conditions of Shanghai and the warm little home, took an 11-day steamship, went up the river, came to Chongqing, and supported the construction of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical College.
And this is a lifetime of perseverance.
When I first arrived in Chongqing, I was surrounded by farmland, the conditions were very difficult, and the sites were borrowed, but everyone was full of enthusiasm, actively building new buildings and improving various departments.
Bian Duhong went to Chongqing in 1957 to work until his retirement in 1999, and has been engaged in clinical research and teaching work such as gynecological tumors, gynecological urological fistula, endometriosis and family planning for many years, and is a famous obstetrics and gynecology expert in southwest China, and a doctor with high medical ethics in the eyes of the people. In addition to treating diseases and saving people, he has also presided over several major medical appraisals, published more than 100 medical professional papers at home and abroad, won many science and technology awards, and participated in the compilation and review of multiple editions of medical textbooks.
In this way, Bian Duhong has worked hard with his colleagues for decades, medical education and research have blossomed in an all-round way, established the authority of the hospital, and built the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical College into the leading medical institution in the southwest region, and the people have a reputation.
Put people first and break down dogmatism
As a doctor, Bian Duhong inherits the guiding ideology of "patient first" in the Red House Hospital, puts himself in the shoes of patients, adheres to the people-oriented, can not open the operation, can be cured with the cheapest medicine, use the cheapest medicine, in order to give a more patient to see a doctor, he tries to drink as little water as possible every time he goes to the clinic, so as not to frequently go to the toilet to delay the time of seeing the clinic.
There was a 30-year-old patient diagnosed with vulvar sarcoma by 5 authoritative medical schools who needed to undergo vulvar resection and invite Bian Duhong to take the knife. When he learned that the patient had the experience of practicing cycling, carefully examined and carefully evaluated and analyzed, he proposed that the vulvar mass was not a sarcoma, but tissue hyperplasia caused by repeated local friction, and there was no need for vulvar resection surgery at all, and it was recommended that the treatment plan be changed to close follow-up. However, everyone will be skeptical about this diagnosis.
It wasn't until a month later that the lump on the patient's vulva was really gone that everyone believed his diagnosis was correct. The patient thus avoided the cruel teratogenic surgery, and if he was granted amnesty, he came to thank Bian Duhong.

As a mentor, Bian Duhong kept pace with the times and imparted medical knowledge without reservation. When teaching theory, he will update the content of the topics he has spoken many times and add new ideas. When teaching rounds, he not only listens to the report, but also personally asks for medical history and personally examines patients to obtain first-hand information. During the practical guidance, he himself acts as the first assistant to assist the following physicians to familiarize themselves with the technology as soon as possible and improve the physicians' independent operation ability.
In his career of more than 60 years, he has trained a large number of outstanding students, many of whom have become the medical backbone of various hospitals, which can be described as "peach and plum all over the world, each is a good talent".
And he himself has always adhered to the noble medical ethics of the Red House Hospital to treat the people, and has never forgotten the original intention of the doctor and the spirit of the Red House.
