On March 4, Beijing time, a FIFA spokesperson confirmed that Ukraine is applying to postpone the World Preliminary Tournament with Scotland.
According to the original plan, Ukraine's semi-final match at Hampton Park stadium against Scotland in the World Preliminary Round play-offs was played on March 24, local time, that is, they were left with only 21 days left. However, now because of the Conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the Ukrainian domestic league has been suspended, so the Ukrainian side hopes that FIFA and UEFA will let them postpone the game.
The other semi-final in the same group will be played by Wales at home against Austria, both at the same time, with the winner battling for a ticket to the World Cup in five days' time. That is, if FIFA agrees to Ukraine's application for an extension, potential final rivals Wales and Austria will be affected to some extent, with the exception of semi-final opponent Scotland.
The planned 2022 World Cup draw will take place on April 1, and it is not known whether Ukraine's application for postponement will delay the draw ceremony as well.
A FIFA spokesman said: "Yes, we have received an application from Ukraine to postpone the match. Both FIFA and UEFA are in regular contact with the Scottish Football Association to find suitable solutions. At the same time, FIFA expresses its deepest condolences to all those affected by the situation in Ukraine. ”
In addition to the World Preliminary Tournament play-offs, Ukraine actually played Scotland against Scotland in the UEFA Nations League in June. Their women's national team also has a match to play against the Scotland women's team in April.
