A freshman at the University of Central Florida whose father worked in the aviation industry, Sweeney was interested in identifying planes flying in the sky from an early age, and later began writing online flight tracking programs to verify his conjectures.
In June 2020, Sweeney began to connect robot programs with social media, creating 15 accounts such as Musk's private jets, tracking the private planes of rich and famous people such as Musk, Bezos, bill gates, etc., and publishing real-time information such as their take-off and landing time and place.
Musk was deeply annoyed by this and worried that his security was threatened, so he personally went to the battlefield and contacted Sweeney, hoping to buy out the program for $5,000 and let him delete the tracking account.
But Sweeney was too cruel, actually wanted to fight the local tycoon to bargain for $50,000, and later asked Musk to give him a chance to intern at the company, Musk did not respond later, and now his whereabouts are still being exposed in real time.
Many people may wonder about this, is it not illegal to expose other people's private jet information? Musk can't deal with a 19-year-old teenage college student?
This is because Sweeney obtains legal public information, using the ADS-B transponder data on the aircraft, which will show the real-time position of the aircraft in the air in real time, and the robot program written by Sweeney can use information such as the altitude of the aircraft and the time of receiving the data to determine the take-off and landing time of the aircraft, and then cross-compare it with the airport database and the anonymous FAA flight plan to finally determine the airport for take-off and landing.
Some people may still wonder, can't this data be encrypted and no longer disclosed, so that people like Sweeney can no longer access it, can't they protect flight data and eliminate security risks?
I suspect that one is to change this rule, which requires the adjustment of the entire industry and the law, which may not be possible for a while and a half; the other is that there is so much air traffic, these data should be made public, otherwise it may cause air traffic accidents.
This time, Sweeney once again announced the whereabouts of more than a dozen planes, including the private plane information of Russia's richest man, Vladimir Potanin, Chelsea football team boss Romain Abramovich and the head of Russia's largest steel producer, Alexander Abramov, which has been followed by 215,000 people.
