Recently, the first "Green Digital Development Forum" was held at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. With the theme of "Digital and Green Dance, Economy and Society Go Hand in Hand", the forum focused on the two major economic and social melodies of "digital development" and "green development", put forward the proposition of "green digitalization", and discussed the importance, urgency and realization path of the deep integration of "digital" and "green". Li Yi, executive director of the Green Digital Development Research Center of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, believes that in the face of a new digital society driven by algorithms, computing power and data, the whole society needs to jointly promote and embark on a healthier and more standardized green development path.

Li Yi | If "digital development" is colored, it must be green

Nowadays, the development of the digital economy has become a global consensus, and all countries are stepping up the planning and layout of the digital economy and introducing relevant policies to promote the development of the digital economy to promote economic growth and social development and enhance competitiveness. Especially in the face of the severe challenges of the new crown epidemic, promoting the continuous innovation of information and communication technologies, increasing the construction of information and communication infrastructure, accelerating the development of the online economy, and promoting the digital transformation of industries have become an important driving force for economic growth.

However, behind the frequent news of the digital economy is the staggering energy consumption and carbon emissions. According to cambridge university research data, the blockchain system that supports bitcoin's operation consumes more electricity per year than Argentina, the Netherlands and the United Arab Emirates, with a specific figure of nearly 120 billion degrees. Swiping a bitcoin transaction consumes the equivalent of 450,000 credit cards.

According to the "White Paper on the Development of China's Digital Economy (2020)" released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, the added value of China's digital economy reached 35.8 trillion yuan in 2019, accounting for 36.2% of GDP, accounting for 1.4 percentage points higher than that of GDP, and according to comparable calibers, the nominal growth rate of China's digital economy in 2019 was 15.6%, which was about 7.85 percentage points higher than the nominal gdp growth rate in the same period.

Experts believe that as China's economy enters a stage of high-quality development, the constraints of resources and the environment on economic development are becoming increasingly prominent, and the tasks of energy conservation and emission reduction and environmental protection are very arduous. Therefore, promoting green development is not only the responsibility of a big country that assumes international obligations, but also an inherent requirement for the transformation of economic development mode.

Digital development and green development are not going their own way, but you must have me and I have you. Digital development and green development, only by deeply integrating and mutually promoting each other to form a synergy, with "digital transformation" and "green transformation" as a whole to drive the transformation of production methods, lifestyles and governance methods, can we truly build a new pattern of green digital development of "digital and green dancing together, economy and society go hand in hand", so as to promote high-quality development. In the words of Li Yi, "If 'digital development' is colored, it must be green; if 'green development' has an engine, it must be digital."
