The youth | reminiscences of the Provincial Industry Exhibition Hall in the 1970s and 1980s

Shandong Industrial Exhibition Hall (hereinafter referred to as "GongZhan Hall") was established in the 1960s, located in BaotuQuan North Road, Jinan City, on the east bank of the West Moat River, south of Jinan Municipal Power Supply Bureau, east of West City Wall Root Street.

In the thirty-first year of the Qing Dynasty (1905), Zhuang Shiru, a native of Juxian County, Shandong, and Liu Enzhu, a native of Yishui, Shandong, jointly initiated the establishment of the Jinan Electric Lamp House. At that time, the factory site was in Qushuiting Street behind the courtyard, with a capital of 279,000 yuan (silver dollars). At the beginning, the scale of the electric lighting room was not large, and the power generation could only be used for the lighting of the government and the business names and residents in the front, back and west gate areas of the official government. In the first year of Xuantong (1909), the factory site was moved to the moat north of the West Gate, which was later the location of the Provincial Workers' Exhibition Hall. At that time, only more than six acres of land were purchased, two boilers of the British Company of Taber were purchased, and two vertical steam generators of Siemens of Germany totaled 420 kilowatts.

Later, the site gradually expanded to the north and south, and after the liberation of Jinan in September 1948, it was renamed Jinan Power Plant. In 1959, a new "Huangtai Power Plant" was built in the eastern suburbs of Jinan, and the power plant by the moat was abolished in 1960, and the original power plant headquarters and main plant were converted into the Provincial Industrial Exhibition Hall; the branch workshop and coal yard in the northern half of the plant were built into the Jinan Municipal Power Supply Bureau.

After the completion of the exhibition hall, it is a provincial institution specializing in exhibition services, and often undertakes many directive exhibition tasks of the provincial party committee and the provincial government. For example, the National Safety Production and Technical Equipment Exhibition, the Shandong Urban Planning Exhibition, the Jinan Iron and Steel Group Achievement Exhibition, the Shandong New Mining Group Large-scale Achievement Exhibition, the Shandong Famous Brand Wanli Activity Exhibition, the Shandong International Machinery Exhibition, etc., is one of the earliest professional exhibition halls in Shandong Province.

In the mid-1970s, I worked in the East Factory of Shandong PaperMaking General Factory, diagonally opposite the main gate of the factory and the Industrial Exhibition Hall, with a moat in the middle. At that time, the exhibition hall was not small, the exhibition hall covered a wide area, there were several exhibition halls, and the exhibition hall was an L-shaped building. There are several large pine trees in the courtyard, and the outdoor space is also empty, which is convenient for groups to gather and park. In the 1970s and 1980s, it was one of the few large-scale exhibition halls in Shandong Province, and many large-scale exhibitions in the province and the city were held here.

This pavilion is not only limited to industrial exhibitions, but also other aspects, such as science and technology, fine arts, calligraphy, photography, urban construction and so on. I remember that the tickets were very cheap that year, and it seemed that for a while they were free to enter. The exhibition and our factory are close neighbors, and sometimes the artists of our factory and the personnel of the publicity department and the trade union often come to help or set up the exhibition.

This old photograph was taken in the mid-1980s, inside the Shandong Provincial Industrial Exhibition Hall. In the 1970s and 1980s, the Provincial Industry Exhibition Hall often held some photography, art, calligraphy exhibitions and exhibitions of new achievements in industry. The woman in the picture is my newly married wife. As you can see from the photographs, the clothing at the time also shows the fashion trends of that era - the woman in the painting, the trendy hairstyle, the red sweater vest; my wife wears wide-leg checkered flared pants, a turtleneck sweater, and a red leather satchel. At that time, China had gradually revealed the atmosphere of the tide of reform and opening up. Unfortunately, this photo is not a color photo, not to mention color film in that era, that is, there are very few black and white rolls. I chose an angle that neither obscured the painting nor placed the subject on the side of a silhouette, and a ray of sunlight entered diagonally from the room, illuminating the face.

The woman on the drawing board was modeling for the painter, and my wife was making a photographic model for me when she admired the painting. This is exactly as described in the poet Bian Zhilin's poem: "You stand on the bridge and look at the scenery, and the people who watch the scenery look at you from upstairs; the bright moon decorates your windows, and you decorate the dreams of others." ”

In the courtyard of the Gongzhan Hall, there is also a stone statue of Mao Zedong that is about two or three stories high. After the "Cultural Revolution" began in 1966, a wave of enthusiasm for the construction of the "Red Sun Memorial Hall" rose up all over the country, and The Mountain Normal University was the first in Jinan to build the largest stone statue of Chairman Mao, followed by the stone statue of the Gongzhan Hall.

In 1967, the backbone of the Red Guards of the Mountain Division came to Beijing and invited Mr. Zhang Songhe, a sculptor of the Beijing Fine Arts Company, to preside over the design of the chairman's portrait in the Mountain Division, at that time Zhang Songhe had sculpted the chairman's stone statue in many domestic colleges and universities such as Beijing Normal University and Hunan Normal University, and had rich experience, and our province also sent a number of sculpture and painting professionals to cooperate, such as Zhang Yulin, Wang Zhaoshan, Li Zhencai, Liu Xin and other artists in our province.

When the statue was poured with cement, more than a dozen People's Liberation Army people took turns to stand guard, and the enthusiasm of the people in that era was very high, working day and night, and it took a month to build the chairman stone statue.

Most of the images of the chairman of the Cultural Revolution that people see now have a slight yellowing and reddish surface, like hard granite. According to Mr. Li Zhencai, an old sculpture artist, in fact, the cement used in the portraits of the chairman of the Mountain Division and the Provincial Industrial Exhibition Hall was specially prepared. They added small stone particles of black, gray and ochre colors to the white cement, stirred them thoroughly, and when they solidified, they formed a granite-like effect. Since the cement will form a layer of "glossy surface" on the outside, in order to pursue better visual effects, it is also necessary to carefully chop in rows with axes to expose the small stones below. The president statue thus made of cement is not only beautiful, but also as strong as stone and can be preserved for hundreds of years.

In December 1999, due to the construction of Baobei Road, the former Provincial Industrial Exhibition Hall, the Power Supply Bureau, and the statue of Mao Zedong in the courtyard were relocated. Since it was built to prevent earthquakes, the statue and the base were connected with a skeleton made of channel steel, which was very difficult to carry. Workers smashed the cement of the base and cut off the channel steel with electric welding before transporting the chairman's portrait to The Chixia Square at the foot of Hero Mountain for display.

There are probably four or five stone statues of Mao Zedong still in Jinan, which have been included in the cultural relics protection.
