Tencent: Achieve carbon neutrality in its own operations and supply chain by 2030

On February 24, Tencent officially announced the "Net Zero Action" and released the "Tencent Carbon Neutrality Target and Action Route Report" for the first time. Tencent put forward the goal of carbon neutrality: to achieve full carbon neutrality of its operations and supply chain no later than 2030, and to achieve 100% green electricity no later than 2030.

According to the report, in 2021, Tencent's greenhouse gas emissions totaled 5.111 million tons. Among them, the direct emissions from greenhouse gas emission sources owned or controlled by the Company (i.e. "Scope 1") and the indirect emissions from purchased electricity or other energy sources (i.e. "Scope 2") were 19,000 tons and 2.349 million tons, respectively, and other indirect emissions from upstream and downstream of the supply chain (i.e. "Scope 3") were 2.743 million tons. The result is a systematic and comprehensive carbon inventory conducted by Tencent based on the internationally accepted carbon emission reduction range standards.

In this regard, Tencent put forward the principle of "giving priority to emission reduction and green electricity, supplemented by offsetting", including energy conservation and efficiency improvement, renewable energy substitution, carbon offsetting, etc.

According to the report, carbon emissions indirectly generated by the purchase of electricity from Tencent's buildings and data centers account for more than 65% of the total emissions. Therefore, building a green data center and using zero-emission renewable energy electricity is a key step for Tencent to achieve carbon neutrality on schedule. Prior to launching the Carbon Neutrality Program, Tencent had been promoting energy conservation in office buildings for many years and was recognized. At present, Tencent has a number of its own buildings that have obtained LEED certification. After low-carbon and energy-saving transformation, in 2020, the electricity consumption of Binhai Building, Tencent's Shenzhen headquarters, saved 5.98 million kWh of electricity on the basis of the previous year, reducing carbon emissions by about 2690 tons.

To this end, Tencent has formulated and designed an overall green electricity trading strategy, and signed a green electricity trading contract in the 2022 annual trading market, with a total of 504 million kWh, and locked in the annual partial power generation of 6 wind power photovoltaic projects.

Based on the above initiatives, Tencent expects to achieve full carbon neutrality of its operations and supply chain no later than 2030, and 100% green electricity no later than 2030.

In addition, in terms of business, Tencent Cloud's digital solutions based on big data, Internet of Things, AI and other technologies help the building industry reduce energy consumption, accelerate the digital transformation of the traditional energy industry, and help enterprises build energy consumption and carbon management platforms. Up to now, the relevant solutions have been applied in a number of projects such as the headquarters of and the zero carbon park of Ganghua Energy.

On April 19, 2021, Tencent proposed the "Sustainable Social Value Innovation" strategy, announcing that it would invest 50 billion yuan in the first phase to set up a "Sustainable Social Value Division" to promote the implementation of the strategy. Among them, a "carbon neutrality laboratory" has been set up for the direction of carbon neutrality to support the long-term carbon neutral transformation of society. Tencent said that in the future, it will try to find the correlation between rural revitalization, ageing, basic science, education equity and carbon neutrality, and create broader value in economic development, social justice, ecological security and other aspects.
