Abbott's global website announced on February 17, US time, that it voluntarily recalled three infant formulas, Namelac, Alimentum and EleCare, produced at its Michigan facility in the United States. There have been 4 consumer complaints about related milk powders before. Abbott said that as part of the quality inspection process, the company conducted tests at the Michigan plant and found Enterobacter sakazaki in non-product contact areas of the plant, but there was no evidence of salmonella, and the investigation is still ongoing.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in a statement that it was investigating consumer complaints about infections caused by Coronale sakasaki and Salmonella Nyhaport with Abbott products. "All four cases related to these complaints have been hospitalized, one of which may have been due to Cronobacterium causing death," the agency said. Not only that, the US FDA also reminds that some abbott products produced at the Sturgis plant in Michigan may have been exported to other countries.
The FDA statement said that workers are inspecting the Abbott plant to find out which bacteria are causing the child to get sick and destroy all the products infected with the bacteria, while reminding consumers to temporarily avoid buying certain infant formula products produced at the factory. The FDA also said a review of Abbott's internal records revealed that earlier, Abbott's factory environment was contaminated with Cronobacter bacteria.
Enterobacter sakazaki is a conditional pathogen present in the environment that may pose a higher health risk to infants aged 0-6 months, especially premature infants, low birth weight infants, and immunocompromised infants.
