From the not-so-elaborate CGI to the re-casting to the skipped plot, Harry Potter fans have been ignoring these flaws in Harry Potter for the sake of this excellent series.
The Harry Potter series of movies, which launched theme parks, video games, exhibitions, and now a new series of movies in the form of Fantastic Beasts, are undoubtedly huge successes, but success does not mean that it is perfect. From the hidden computer stunts (which were considered good at the time), to the controversy surrounding the author, to the loopholes in the plot, Harry Potter actually had a lot of problems.
Of course, there are some fans who are very real, especially some fans abroad, who have not chosen to ignore those issues, such as the question of Rowling's views on transgender people, which may have excluded the famous author from the reunion special.
Let's take a look at the main flaws that are easy for fans to ignore.
CGI sucks
In the Harry Potter series, especially the first few films, CGI and special effects are actually terrible. From the trolls on the mountain to the Quidditch games, the early effects were not very good, but it is not difficult to see that fans are still happy.
At the time of the film's release, this use of CGI was effective and appropriate, and now that 20 years later, the technology has advanced a lot, so it makes no sense to compare it. If one day the series is remade, this will certainly be the first problem to be solved, but for the original film, the technology at that time did not have a good solution for many things that needed to be fictionalized.
Characters are missing
Because the details in the book are too detailed, many of the characters were cut out in order to condense the story onto the big screen. Some of these characters are minor characters whose absence has no real effect on the plot, but others are a bigger problem. The disappearance of Twinkles and other Hogwarts house-elves is a problem, but the saddest thing for fans is not seeing Peeves on the big screen.
For the most part, these missing characters didn't have much of an impact on the plot —Peeves didn't really do much except to make Hogwarts more interesting, and Flash was successfully weeded out, though it did create a world that lacked the richness of the original story.
Plot vulnerabilities
Although the core story of the film has not changed, it is full of many plot holes, some surprisingly small and some surprisingly large. While fans will surely shout about the series' main plot holes — like Harry's eyes are different in color than his mother's eyes. Many of the smaller issues have long been ignored by fans, and some have even become popular memes or jokes.
In many cases, the plot's flaws are explained in the book, which may explain why many fans ignore them because they know what the problem is and what the original explanation in the book is. For example, when Harry talks to Hermione and Ron about Hagrid telling him that he wants a dragon, the scene doesn't actually appear in the movie. But in the book, it's a complete dialogue. Many people who have read the book may easily overlook this flaw, because in such a complex world, fans can also accept the differences that novels and movies may have.
Character reforging
Throughout the series, a large number of characters have been re-cast, and what is even more surprising is that the purpose from the beginning was to complete the entire seven books. Dumbledore, Lavender Brown, and even Crabbe all changed during the filming.
In most cases, these changes are due to reasons beyond the studio's control. For example, the original Dumbledore actor Richard Harris unfortunately died, Michael Gunburn replaced him, and Crabbe's actor was replaced by Bryce Shabini, because the actor James Willett was arrested for a crime. Fans, however, were not happy with Ravenda Brown's replacement. Ravenda Brown was originally played by black actresses Catherine Cowley and Jennifer Smith, but was later replaced by Jesse Cave. This led to accusations from fans, as this was a bit inappropriate for Ravenda Brown as an actor in a secondary role, and changing actors when Brown became the main character. But there are also many fans who believe that the film was not intended to make Brown a real front-end character.
End-of-period attacks
Another big headache in the series was that Voldemort always chose his attacks and evil actions at the end of the semester — so Harry was always able to beat him at the end of the school year so that he could earn enough points to win the Gryffindor House Cup.
The simple reason for this is, of course, to facilitate the structure of the storytelling, and while there's no reason to say it's bound to be realistic, there's no real reason to say it's unreasonable, so it's not hard to ignore this weird design. Fans may want to see as much explanation as possible in the wizarding world, but they also understand the practical limitations.
Role differences
While many of the actors in the Harry Potter films are considered to have been inspired by the novel, they don't always match the descriptions in the book. From Hagrid being much smaller than described in the book, to Hermione being more traditional than described in the book, to Neville's hair color not being the right color, and many of the original orders and professors seemingly older than described in the book, there are many characters that do not match the original descriptions in the book.
However, practicality is the driving factor behind these changes, and coupled with the fact that fans are satisfied with these changes, this is also easy to ignore. Besides, when choosing child actors, who knows if they will grow up to be as tall as the characters in the book, and dealing with big characters like Hagrid is always limited by the practicality of filming. When these changes do not cause the story itself to be derogated, then only the purists of the novel will be confused.
Lack of diversity
This issue has been raised abroad by a growing number of fans who are disappointed by the overwhelming white race of the wizarding world, but it is still a major flaw that fans have to ignore in order to enjoy watching movies repeatedly. While several roles are played by non-white actors, such as Zhang Qiu and Angelica Johnson, the vast majority are white actors like the "Golden Trio."
To some extent, the issue has been resolved, with Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (stage play) choosing a black actress to play Hermione, which led Rowling to also come forward and declare that she never explicitly pointed out race and that she supported the change. So it's conceivable that if the film were remade, there would undoubtedly be more protagonists played by non-white actors.
Logical bias
While many of the details of the wizarding world were carefully conceived by Rowling, there were still many aspects that seemed meaningless, from the lack of magical universities, to the economic and price system of magical items, to the use of items such as quill pens despite the availability of more modern and convenient alternatives, and there were some considerable logical problems with the magical world described by Rowling.
Some of these can easily be boiled down to aesthetic choices to create the magical atmosphere of Hogwarts, which is absolutely acceptable to fans, of course, other explanations may not make sense, explaining more logical problems will only be more complex, fortunately none of these will greatly affect the plot itself.
Shape upside down
Two of the most controversial characters in the Harry Potter series are Dumbledore and Snape – one set as a hero but actually acting more like a villain, and the other set as a villain but given a journey of redemption. Sure, these may be the wonders of the story, but they can also be problematic because Dumbledore is not a villain, and Snape's redemption will not convince many fans.
Of course, many of Dumbledore's bad behaviors were necessary for plot development, so it was easier to forgive as well. However, Snape is still deeply disliked by many, who believe that his final disclosure is not enough to make up for years of bad behavior towards Harry. Also, Snape's "tragedy" comes down to his failure to get a woman's love, which fans certainly have a hard time ignoring.
Cut too much
Without a doubt, one of the biggest problems with adaptations is that too much is removed from the novel. Sure, the movie's core plot hasn't changed, but the other secondary plots and entire storylines are missing in the movie — from Peeves and Death Party to SPEW and Hermione fighting for the house-elves.
Like a lot of things, these can be ignored because they're not far from the center of the story, or the magic of the world, and the movie just makes these fleshy stories a little less. Of course, fans who really miss them can always pick up the novel and relive the magic charm!
