Willingness and Emotion: The Causality of Action in Cartesian Psycho-Physiology

Time: February 20 (Sunday) 19:00-21:00

Venue: Tencent Conference (ID: 702872685)

Speaker: She Ruidan (Researcher, Institute of Philosophy, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences)

In the lecture, we will consider the extension of the initiative and motivation of the function of the mind in Descartes' physiological-psychological approach, and we will be concerned with the question: What is the relationship between the subject's will and emotion? According to Descartes' definition, will is the active function of the mind and emotion is the active function of the mind, but is there a complete rupture between the two? Is the experience of emotion determined solely by a given physiological structure and situation, or is it also dependent to some extent on the active participation of the agent? How are emotions different from other emotional contents of the mind, such as our perception of colors and smells, or our feelings of hunger, pain, and so on? Do they differ only on the distinction between physiological structure and function or on the relationship between them and the actions of the subject? In the context of daily life, we will say that I should listen to my original intention, pursue my own love, etc., what is the original intention, what is "my" love? As the content of the mind of the movable, love, hate, sorrow, and joy do not come from my will by definition, so in what sense can it be said that they belong to me and not just happen to me? Does the will's identification with these emotional tendencies reflect its freedom or its finiteness? Is it enough for the emotion to be strong enough to push us to complete an action without the need for willing participation? In other words, does the explanation of the motivation to act necessarily need to include the dimension of will? With these questions in mind, we enter the discussion of the relationship between emotion and will.
