On February 16, the Sloan Foundation announced the winners of the 2022 Sloan Research Fellowships, with a total of 118 scholars, including 27 Chinese scholars.

The 2022 winners are from 51 universities in the U.S. and Canada. UCLA ranked first among all institutions, with a total of 8 winners from the school. Northwestern University was selected by 6 scholars, and 5 scholars from Stanford University, the University of Chicago and Columbia University were selected.

Among the 7 Chinese scholars who won the award in the field of mathematics, 2 are from peking university, namely Liu Yuchen and Zhang Ruixiang.

Of the 6 Chinese scholars who won the award in the field of chemistry, 2 were from the University of Science and Technology of China, namely Pingyuan and Zhang Sen.

Among the 20 winners in the field of computer science, Chinese scholars accounted for 5 seats, of which 3 were Tsinghua alumni, namely Chen Danqi, Fang Fei and Gu Quanquan. Chen Danqi's research areas are natural language processing, machine learning, and deep learning; Fang Fei's research areas are artificial intelligence and multi-agent systems; and Gu Quanquan's research areas are statistical machine learning.

Before winning the Sloan Award, Chen Danqi, who was born in The Yao class of Tsinghua University, was already a well-known "big god" in the field of computing. In 2018, Chen Danqi received a ph.D. in computer science from Stanford University, and his doctoral dissertation became one of the hottest graduation papers at Stanford University in the past decade, and won the Best Doctoral Dissertation Award that year. Danqi Chen is an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at Princeton University, a visiting scientist at Facebook AI Research (FAIR), a series of research achievements in the field of natural language processing (NLP), and one of the authors of RoBERTa.

Since 2007, 53 of its previous winners have won nobel prizes, 17 have won the Fields Medal in mathematics, 69 have won the National Medal of Science, and 22 have won the John Bates Clarke Prize in Economics.

The award was established in 1955 to support and reward outstanding scientists and scholars early in their careers. Awarded annually by The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the winner will receive a $75,000 prize that can be used to support any expenses for two years of their research. The awards cover subject areas such as chemistry, computer science, earth system science, economics, mathematics, neuroscience and physics. More than 1,000 researchers are nominated each year.
