What is it like to get a triple-double at Madison Garden, a basketball mecca of 127 days and under the age of 20? You have to ask thunder rookie Josh Gidey about this. In the Thunder's 127-123 away win over the Knicks, Gidy played 39 minutes, shooting 11-of-22 and having 28 points, 11 rebounds, 12 assists and 1 steal.
On Feb. 13, the Thunder played against the Bulls, and at the age of 125, Gidy, 19, scored 11 points, 12 boards and 10 assists. He's already got three triple-doubles in the NBA. As a result, the three youngest triple-doubles in NBA history are all won by Gidey. On Jan. 3, the Thunder played against the Lone Rangers, and Gidy scored 17 points, 13 boards and 14 assists, becoming the youngest Mr. Triple-Double in the NBA (19 years and 84 days).
Before Gidy, the NBA's youngest triple-double record was held by three goals (19 years and 140 days). At present, Gidey is 12 days away from 19 years old and 140 days away, and he is still expected to take another three doubles and continue to dominate the list! Behind Gidey and the three goals are also young talents, including Fultz, Doncic and The Ball Brother, see the picture below for details.
Gedy also has several records: 1. The first young player in NBA history to cut a triple-double on the Knicks' head (before the age of 20); 2. The youngest player in NBA history to win two consecutive triple-doubles; 3. On December 27, the Thunder vs. Pelicans, Gedy scored 0 points, 10 boards and 10 assists, becoming the first player in the NBA in nearly 50 years who did not score but won a double-double.
Josh Gidey was born on October 10, 2002, with a height and arm span of 2.03 meters, and his static talent is not outstanding. But if You put Gidy in the point guard position, he has a clear advantage in height. With his father in the Australian NBL League, Gidy has shown a game quotient, awareness and big picture beyond the average child from an early age.
In the summer of 2020, three-goal came out of the NBL league and became the NBA's flower exploration show. It also gave Gidi some inspiration, as the 17-year-old dropped invitations to multiple NCAA teams to play in the NBL. In the 2020-21 season, in his first season at the NBL, Gidy averaged 10.9 points, 7.3 rebounds and 7.6 assists per game.
He shot 42.5 percent from the field, 29.3 percent from three-point range and 69.1 percent from the free throws. As can be seen from the data, Gidy's shooting ability is average, but assists and rebounds are strong. In the 2021 NBA Draft, the Thunder used the No. 6 pick in their hands to pick Gidy, the top five are: Cunningham, Green, Mobley, Barnes and Sargus.
Gidy's father publicly said in an interview that the Warriors had promised before the draft that they would select Gidy with the No. 7 pick in their hands, but they were taken away by the Thunder. Some fans also said that if Gidy is selected by the Warriors, he will certainly not get as much playing time as the Thunder, and he may not be able to break the NBA's youngest triple-double record.
So far this season, Gidy has played in 52 games for the Thunder, averaging 12.3 points, 7.7 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 0.9 steals per game. He shot 41.8 percent from the field, 26.7 percent from three-point range, and 70.5 percent from the free throw line. Some people compare Gidey to Simmons, in fact, it is not the same, Gidey can average 4 three-point shots per game!
