Back in November 2021, Musk launched a Tesla stock sales spree by conducting a poll on Twitter asking if users of the social media platform should sell about 10 percent of their stake in the electric car maker, and as of the end of December, Musk had sold 15.7 million shares of TSLA shares, but Musk was ultimately able to increase his TSLA shares by exercising stock options to buy more shares at $6.24 per share.

Musk also pointed out in December that he will pay about $11 billion in taxes due to his sell-off of Tesla stock, which also makes Musk's 2021 tax bill one of the largest in U.S. history, which is equivalent to about $1 million in taxes paid every day since Musk came to the University of Pennsylvania in 1992 to study business and physics.
