Relief of Bayon Monastery

Hello everyone! Today I would like to introduce you to the relief of the outer wall of Bayon Monastery in the ancient city of Angkor in Cambodia.

The ancient city of Angkor was the last capital of the Angkor Dynasty of the Khmer Empire in Cambodia from 803 to 1432 AD, and in its heyday a large number of splendid monasteries and temples were built and prospered for a while.

However, it was later invaded by the emerging Siamese state, the dynasty abandoned the city and moved south to Phnom Penh, and the ancient city of Angkor was hidden and forgotten, until it was inadvertently discovered by French explorers in the primeval forest in 1861.

Bayon Monastery is a famous temple in the ruins of the ancient city of Angkor, built at the end of the 12th century, the bas-relief murals of Bayon Temple, with a total length of 1200 meters and more than 10,000 figures. Here, the reliefs are no longer an ancillary emoticons of the inscriptions, they have a strong narrative and historical significance.

The reliefs on the outside of the cloister truly record the invaders Annam coming to fight against the Khmer army led by King Jayavarman VII. Among them, the sea battlefield in the south is particularly beautifully depicted, the imposing intruder fleet, the Khmer warriors who died floating in the water with the fish, every line and every stone tells the fierceness and cruelty of this war.

The reliefs also depict in great detail the daily lives of Khmer villagers and courtiers, as well as the construction of Tabumu and Longduan Monasteries dedicated by Jayavarman VII to his parents. On an unfinished relief wall to the northwest, a high level of entertainment is being staged, including sports, trick-or-treating and acrobatics, along with ascetics and teams of animals.
