Executive Summary
"Dang Kou Zhi", also known as "Jie Shui Hu Zhuan", is a reversal of the "Water Margin". The author Yu Wanchun personally participated in the suppression of the Yaomin uprising in his youth, and hated the "Water Margin" that praised the hero of Liangshan Po, but he knew that "Water Margin" had long been widely circulated and deeply rooted in the hearts of the people, and could not be prohibited, so he wanted to write a "Knot Water Margin" to compete with the original work.
In "Lang Kou Zhi", the author did everything in his power to demonize the Liangshan peasant rebels, and wrote the heroes of Liangshan as negative characters one by one. At the same time, it has reshaped a series of "positive" heroic characters such as Chen Xizhen, Chen Liqing, and Liu Guang. The author takes the fate of Chen Xizhen's father and daughter as the main line, writing that Chen Liqing resisted Gao Ya's internal flirtation, and the father and daughter were forced to go to the ape arm village to avoid the persecution of Gao Li's father and son. However, they opposed Liangshan at every turn, won the trust of the imperial court, and together with the officials and troops, finally set foot on Liangshan, captured Song Jiang and thirty-six other people alive, and sacrificed the imperial court.
The creation of "Dang Kou Zhi" lasted for twenty-two years, and the author took great pains in art. Lu Xun said: "His articles are beautiful, and the descriptions are not bad, but the ideas are really unbearable" ("The Historical Changes of the Chinese Novel"). The characters in the novel have distinct personalities, and the feelings of Chen Xizhen's father and daughter are rendered, which is real and touching. In the arrangement of the plot structure, it is also quite ingenious.
The novel's distortion and attack on the Liangshan rebels and their leaders fully reflect the author's position and viewpoint of the feudal landlord class that hates the peasant uprising and the people's rebellion. Readers are expected to pay attention to analysis and identification when reading.
