According to the latest report released by the research agency Statista, Apple is the most popular headphone brand in the United States and leads its competitors by considerable advantage. In Statista's survey of 4220 U.S. adults, 34.4 percent of respondents used AirPods at Apple. It was followed by Apple-owned Beats, which came in second with 15.3%.

When Apple launched AirPods with the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus in September 2016, the report said, consumer reactions were mixed at best. While many were impressed by the technology behind Apple's first true wireless headphones, their design drew a lot of criticism. There's a lot of banter on the internet about the look, price, and overall appeal of this headset.

But five years later, it's clear that Apple is laughing again to the end. At the moment, The AirPods have been updated to the third generation and are likely to be the most popular headphones on the planet. Dan Ives, an analyst at Wedbush, estimates that AirPods has grown into Apple's $20 billion annual revenue business, with sales expected to reach 100 million this year.
