Later on February 10, 2022 local time, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that Tesla would recall 578,607 cars in the United States because the "Boombox" function was too loud to violate federal safety standards.

"Boombox" is tesla's OTA during the Christmas 2020 OTpad push in-car "menu" function, which allows drivers to customize the car horn sound, can choose the goat call, fart sound and other personalized horn.

In addition, users can upload five custom songs that are played externally while driving through external speakers.

NHTSA believes that the sound played by the "Boombox" function may mislead pedestrians, leading to safety issues. Furthermore, this violates the performance requirements outlined by the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 141 (FMVSS 141), which outlines pedestrian alarm sounds for hybrid and electric vehicles.

In addition, the standard prohibits manufacturers from altering or modifying the sound emission capabilities of vehicle pedestrian warning systems (PWS).

The recall is designed only for the Model S, Model X, Model Y and Model 3 produced in 2017-2022 in the U.S. market, and Tesla will disable the "Boombox" function of the relevant models through OTA.
