With the holding of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games, the winter Olympic mascot "Ice Pier" quickly became popular. Especially in recent times, the online and offline sales of "ice piers" have been hot, and even the scene of "one pier is difficult to find".

How was the mascot of this cute giant panda image born? What is its unique charm that can arouse the popularity of everyone? Liu Pingyun, chief executive of the "ice pier" design, recently in Jiangxi province in jiangxi interview, unveiled the birth process of the "ice pier" and told the story behind the creation of the "ice pier".

Liu Pingyun, vice dean (presiding) of the School of Visual Arts and Design of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, is a xinyu in Jiangxi. During the Spring Festival, he deliberately returned to his hometown to spread the Winter Olympic culture to the people of his hometown by introducing the creation process of the Winter Olympic mascot "Ice Pier", the knowledge of the Winter Olympics, and the distribution of mascots.

The image of the "Ice Pier" work was originally derived from the "Ice Sugar Gourd"

According to reports, since August 2018, the design team led by Cao Xue and Liu Pingyun of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts has begun the design of the mascot of the Beijing Winter Olympics.

Liu Pingyun revealed to the China News Agency reporter that in fact, the image of their initial shortlisted mascot works is not the giant panda that everyone sees now, but its creative prototype is the traditional snack rock sugar gourd in northern China. "I'm a southerner, and when I was a child, my impression of the north was ice and snow, and rock sugar gourd." Liu Pingyun said.

"But we found that the rock sugar gourd, as a presentation and carrying the image of the country, still feels too much weight." Liu Pingyun said that their design team began to try to incorporate new elements.

In the time that followed, the design team began a 7-month revision while retaining the ice shell of the sugar gourd. They tried to change their images under the ice shell to tigers, rabbits or elk, and eventually decided that the national treasure giant panda was the most suitable representative of China.

Liu Pingyun specifically mentioned that they introduced the image of the "ice ribbon" of the National Speed Skating Hall into the helmet of the giant panda, "At that time, it felt that we had hope at once, and the whole mental outlook of the giant panda was renewed, with color, warmth and temperature." ”

In the end, after thousands of repeated revisions by the design team, the "ice pier" stood out from nearly 6,000 entries from around the world and was officially identified as the mascot of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

The "ice pier" is not only the image of the giant panda, but also has a rich meaning behind it

As an important element of the visual image system of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, the mascot "Ice Pier" has been widely concerned and loved by the public since its birth.

As a core member of the design team of "Ice Pier", Liu Pingyun believes that "Ice Pier" is not just a thick and cute giant panda image, but the meaning behind it is very rich.

"It is the representative of China, the representative of China's image, solid, generous and friendly." To use one word, that is warmth. Warmth is a sign of Chinese friendliness and peace. Liu Pingyun said.

The "ice pier" combines the image of the giant panda with the super-energetic ice crystal shell, the head shell shape is taken from the ice and snow sports helmet, decorated with colored aura, and the overall image resembles an astronaut.

In Liu Pingyun's view, the giant panda is recognized by the world as a national treasure of China, with a friendly and cute image and a cute attitude. The giant panda's head is decorated with a colorful halo, and the overall shape is like an astronaut, like an ice and snow sports expert from the future, reflecting the combination of modern technology and ice and snow sports, implying to create extraordinary and explore the future.

Compared with the previous giant panda mascot "Ice Pier", there is inheritance and innovation

In fact, from the mascot "Panpan" of the 1990 Beijing Asian Games, to one of the mascots of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Fuwa "Jingjing", to the mascot of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics "Ice Pier", the mascots of the three major events have used the image of giant pandas.

How to break the traditional form to create a new creation is a difficult point for the design team. Liu Pingyun's point of view is "the aggregation of historical and current symbols."

Liu Pingyun said that they set 2022 as the future, with a sense of science and technology world, "ice pier" needs to add some era characteristics under the historical symbol, such as 3D technology, some scientific and technological elements of the 5G era, etc.

"Let it have the characteristics of the times, so that it can form the shape of the 'ice pier' with the significance of the times today." Liu Pingyun believes that compared with the previous giant panda mascots, the "ice pier" has both the inheritance of traditional culture and the breakthrough and innovation of new technologies in the new era.

For the recent continuous popularity of "ice piers", Liu Pingyun is both surprised and proud. He believes that the reason why "ice piers" can be loved by Chinese and foreign people is that behind it reveals the strong appeal and attraction of Chinese culture.

Liu Pingyun, who has recently been busy promoting the winter Olympic culture in many places in Gansu and Guangdong provinces, said frankly that as a designer and a cultural volunteer, he believes that through his efforts, he can spread the winter Olympic culture farther and pull the ice and snow sports in China and even the world, especially so that the people of southern China can also participate more in the Winter Olympics.
