Preface

The costumes used by opera actors for performance are commonly known as "line heads". During the Song and Yuan dynasties, it has formed a certain system. Since the Ming and Qing dynasties, the opera costumes formed on the basis of the official costumes of the Ming Dynasty have gradually become complete, mainly including pythons, drapes, leanings, pleats, clothes, kaiji, helmets, boots and shoes, and also have their own specifications in terms of style, pattern, color and so on.

Traditional opera costumes use five colors of red, green, white, black and yellow to express the level of the characters, commonly known as the "upper five colors"; later derived from the dark blue, lake color, pink, bronze, purple, then called "lower five colors". What color the character wears is determined by its status and personality, such as the emperor wearing a yellow python symbolizes the supreme position of power, and the black python of the bao gong indicates a just and upright personality.

Orange Red Man Leans Qing

Leaning or "hard leaning", also known as "armor", is the attire of a warrior in traditional drama.
