LGBTQ advocacy groups and political groups see the confirmation of Wang's nomination as a sign of progress.

Imani Rupert-Gordon, executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, said Ms. Wang's appointment was part of a series of high-level LGBTQ government officials appointed by the Biden administration.

"When Biden took office, he promised to reform the executive branch and appoint talent that fully reflects the diversity of this great nation's population, including people of color and members of the LGBTQ community," he said in a statement.
