Wang Yumin became the first Asian-American lesbian at the ambassadorial level in the United States and will be appointed as the executive director of the Asian Development Bank

The Senate on Tuesday (8th) voted 66 in favor and 31 votes against to officially approve the first lesbian of color to serve as an ambassador-level position. Chantale Wong will become executive director of the Asian Development Bank.

NBC reported that President Joe Biden nominated her for the position last July. Mr. Wang, an Asian-American, has more than 30 years of experience in finance, technology and the environment, and has also served as acting budget director for the Treasury Department and director of budget for NASA, a White House press release said.

LGBTQ advocacy groups and political groups see the confirmation of Wang's nomination as a sign of progress.

Imani Rupert-Gordon, executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, said Ms. Wang's appointment was part of a series of high-level LGBTQ government officials appointed by the Biden administration.

"When Biden took office, he promised to reform the executive branch and appoint talent that fully reflects the diversity of this great nation's population, including people of color and members of the LGBTQ community," he said in a statement.
