Oliver Cromwell, everyone knows, the famous British politician and military man. Born into a new aristocratic family, Cromwell studied at a prestigious Puritan college in Cambridge as a young man and was a devout Puritan.
In 1642, the English Civil War broke out, Cromwell chose the parliamentary camp against King Charles I and the royalists, and the "Iron Horse Army" he himself formed repeatedly and slowly climbed to the peak of power with extraordinary military strength.
He forced King Charles I to abdicate, dissolve Parliament, abolish the monarchy, and eventually became the protector himself, becoming the supreme ruler of England, and then he did not let the English spend Christmas.
Because in the eyes of Cromwell and his Puritans, Easter and Good Friday were the original holidays of Christianity, and the others were pagan holidays, such as Halloween and Christmas, which threatened the core beliefs of Christianity.
So Cromwell banned Christmas, including Christmas dinners. On Christmas Eve, he even ordered soldiers to enter and leave civilian homes at will, conduct inspections, and confiscate all the meat of civilians.
In addition to this, he abolished almost all entertainment activities of the time. He believed that these meaningless activities had an impact on the Puritans' belief in Christ.
(1) Smoking and drinking are prohibited, and countless taverns are closed.
(2) All sports activities, including horse racing, wrestling, and football, are prohibited.
(3) Bear fighting and cockfighting are prohibited. Bears and roosters are slaughtered.
(4) Parties are prohibited.
(5) Adultery is prohibited, and all discoveries are punishable by death.
(6) Makeup and clothing decoration are prohibited. The Puritans enacted thrifty ordinances that ordered the removal of ornaments on the clothing of men and women.
(7) It is forbidden to swear without cause. Some are punished for saying "God testifies"; some are punished for saying "guarantee with life".
(8) It is forbidden to walk outdoors on the Sabbath. On the Sabbath, in addition to going to church, it is also illegal to walk outdoors, and some have even suggested that sitting in the doorway or leaning against the door on the Sabbath is even suggested.
But the most dog is that although Cromwell banned a lot of entertainment, he still liked to smoke and listen to music behind his back.
It was not until 1658 that Cromwell died of pneumonia. Two years later, Charles II and the royalists retook the country and returned to the monarchy, and Christmas Eve and entertainment began to be legalized again.
